Baseball: Four Cajuns Land on ABCA South Central Region Team
LAFAYETTE – The Ragin’ Cajuns baseball quartet of Caleb Adams, Dex Kjerstad, Austin Robichaux and Tyler Girouard has been named to the 2013 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) South Central All-Region Team.
Adams and Kjerstad were first team selections. Robichaux and Girouard received second team honors.
Collectively, they become the first Cajuns to receive ABCA South Central Region accolades since Zach Osborne and Chad Keefer were selected in 2010.
The ABCA All-America team will be announced after the conclusion of the College World Series. Being first team selections on the all-region squad, Adams and Kjerstad are eligible for ABCA All-America honors.
Adams, the Central Region First-Team designated hitter, led the Cajuns with 16 home runs and 55 RBI. A second team All-Sun Belt pick he also led the squad with 15 multi-RBI games. The Texarkana, Texas, native ranked Top 10 nationally in home runs and Top 20 nationally in slugging percentage.
Kjerstad was one of three outfielders on the first team joined by Troy’s Danny Collins and Central Arkansas’ Forrestt Allday. He led the Cajuns with 32 multiple-hit games, collecting nine multi-hit games in season’s final 12 contest. Kjerstad, also named first team All-Sun Belt, recorded 99 hits, second-most in school history, and finished the season Top 20 nationally in average (.388), runs (63) and hits (99).
Robichaux pitched at least seven complete innings in nine of 16 starts which included seven of 10 Sun Belt series on the way to earning first team All-Sun Belt accolades. He topped Cajuns pitching staff with 88 strikeouts and eight quality starts over 109 1/3 innings. Head coach Tony Robichaux’s youngest son limited foes to two earned runs or less in 11 of 16 starts.
A selection at third base, Girouard carried a batting average above .360 from March 10 to season’s end. He spent several weeks ranked in the Top 50 in the nation in average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. The Lafayette native had only four errors through 125 chances at third base (.968 FLD%) and finished with a career-best 64 hits, 41 RBI and 105 total bases.
