Susie’s Fond Memories of Coach Blanco were submitted March 25, 2021 and posted by Ed Dugas.

“Some call me Raymond. Some call me Ray. Some call me Coach…” Familiar words spoken by Raymond Blanco.

Known as “Coach” to most, I came into the Blanco family on April 1, 1979 when I started working for then, Dean of Students, Raymond Blanco.

Coach has always pulled for the “little guy” and those who were the most disadvantaged. Growing up in an Italian family in Birmingham, Alabama, on the poor side of the city and experiencing discrimination himself, made him the person he is today. He understands the struggles of the underprivileged and has worked tirelessly his entire life to try to make a difference.

He brought that philosophy into his style of leadership to Student Affairs at UL. His staff understood that, “You are here for the students.” That was his number one message. He has always been a champion for those students who had the biggest hurdles to overcome. He led the charge in the desegregation of the University and was directly involved in the resolution of many problems that were encountered during those often tumultuous of times.

This philosophy, as well as his great faith have led him through his journey in life. Those of us who have been blessed and fortunate enough to be included in Coach’s, “inner circle” have learned so many valuable life lessons from him.

Through his many years at UL, Coach’s title changed many times, from football “Coach”, to Dean of Men, to Dean of Students, to Vice President for Student Affairs.

I think if you’d ask him, he’d say that his favorite title would be “Raymond” to his beloved Kathleen and “Popa” to his 6 kids…his greatest accomplishment of all.
