Beryl Shipley Living Memorial Basketball team member for 1960/1961. (redshirted 1959/1960) Because of circumstances, I found myself playing basketball in a New Orleans YMCA with no means to complete my education except to obtain a 2-year scholarship for one year of eligibility. I wrote some letters and received a wire from Coach Shipley to come to USL to tryout. After working out and meeting with coaches Shipley and Curtis, I ultimately received the scholarship. I redshirted the first year. I used to take the station wagon to scout other teams. One night on a scouting assignment, I wrecked the car. When I called the Coach he asked me how I was. When I said ok, he sent me another car and told me to keep going, he needed that report. I got married before my second year and came back to school a few pounds (30) heavier than my playing weight. Coach congratulated me and as a gift allowed me to run an additional 30 laps after every practice until I got my weight down. My most vivid memories of Coach Shipley was the running of the Auburn Shuffle, learning how to take a lick. In my first game out of state in Kentucky, I took a violent lick and while I was laying on the ground the referee looked at me and said I shouldn’t have been in the way. I told Coach I didn’t think taking a lick had reached the north yet. On the trip to Kentucky, we went through a small Mississippi town. As we stopped for a drink, Coach Shipley and Curtis decided to have some fun. So they told the attendant and other couple of fellows sitting on the porch that there was a big fight down the street and around the corner. They said it had something to do with the elections. Everybody in the place including the owner left and ran down the street to see the fight. He told us to just help ourselves and leave the money on the counter. We did it and left quickly. I graduated from USL, worked 32 years at Chrysler Corporation, had 5 children, and 7 grandchildren and now am retired and playing golf in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Coach Shipley gave me an opportunity to get an education when I didn’t have a lot to offer (one year of eligibility). He was a tough man but fair. He had a profound impact in my life. * * * * * Basketball Team Member for 1960/1961 * * * * * Patricia “Pat†Wallace, 76, of Pinehurst, passed away suddenly Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. A celebration of her life will be held at the Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines, Saturday, Oct. 28. Pat was born and raised in New Orleans to the late George and Rae Lacoume Tonry. On Aug.13, 1960 she married Charles “Mike†Wallace.They spent about 30 years in Michigan raising their family. They retired to Pinehurst in the late 1990s, where Pat loved to play golf and bridge, entertain family and friends, and travel. She had been a member of the Women of the Pines, the Chippers and the Birdies. In addition to her husband, Pat is survived by their children, Deborah Rakas and husband, Marc, Michael Wallace and wife, Chris, Michelle Proulx and husband, Jeffrey, Daniel Wallace, and Susan Bentley and husband, Darin; grandchildren, Andre, Jordan, Christina, Brittany, Allie, Brian and Ben; and siblings, Pamela Comeaux and husband, Sanford, Mary Beth Neal and husband, Ron, and Gary Tonry and wife, Abigail.
