Mike’s Living Memorial to Coach Shipley sent 8/29/2017 is followed by information he had posted earlier in his profile.

Beryl Shipley Living Memorial
Charles (Mike) Wallace
1959-1961

Basketball team member for 1960/1961. (redshirted 1959/1960)

Because of circumstances, I found myself playing basketball in a New Orleans YMCA with no means to complete my education except to obtain a 2-year scholarship for one year of eligibility. I wrote some letters and received a wire from Coach Shipley to come to USL to tryout. After working out and meeting with coaches Shipley and Curtis, I ultimately received the scholarship.

I redshirted the first year. I used to take the station wagon to scout other teams. One night on a scouting assignment, I wrecked the car. When I called the Coach he asked me how I was. When I said ok, he sent me another car and told me to keep going, he needed that report.

I got married before my second year and came back to school a few pounds (30) heavier than my playing weight. Coach congratulated me and as a gift allowed me to run an additional 30 laps after every practice until I got my weight down.

My most vivid memories of Coach Shipley was the running of the Auburn Shuffle, learning how to take a lick. In my first game out of state in Kentucky, I took a violent lick and while I was laying on the ground the referee looked at me and said I shouldn’t have been in the way. I told Coach I didn’t think taking a lick had reached the north yet.

On the trip to Kentucky, we went through a small Mississippi town. As we stopped for a drink, Coach Shipley and Curtis decided to have some fun. So they told the attendant and other couple of fellows sitting on the porch that there was a big fight down the street and around the corner. They said it had something to do with the elections. Everybody in the place including the owner left and ran down the street to see the fight. He told us to just help ourselves and leave the money on the counter. We did it and left quickly.

I graduated from USL, worked 32 years at Chrysler Corporation, had 5 children, and 7 grandchildren and now am retired and playing golf in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Coach Shipley gave me an opportunity to get an education when I didn’t have a lot to offer (one year of eligibility). He was a tough man but fair. He had a profound impact in my life.

Basketball Team Member for 1960/1961
(redshirted 1959/1960).
Wife – Patricia (met at USL in 1959, married in 1960)
Children – Debbie, Mike, Michelle, Dan, and Sue
Grandchildren – Andre’, Jordan, Christina, Brittany, Allie, Brian and Ben.
Fond memories include the Auburn Shuffle; taking a lick; McHorris shooting jumpers; Thompson’s soft hooks; Humphreys’ top of the key jumpers; Simon’s cockiness (and ability); Shelby’s quiet leadership; Finley’s hard nosed play; Andrews, Church, Breyel, Jarboe, Stacy, Miller, Thomas, Bolden – all good guys.
McHorris and I doing many extra laps after practice just because we got married and came back to school a few (30) pounds heavier than our playing weight.
In my first year, I roomed with Larry Simon. We used to beat each other up playing one-on-one. (He said I was the only one who could beat him – he probably told that to everyone). Every once in awhile Larry’s Mom would call and let us know she made a big pot of gumbo. What great eating.
I’m sad that Larry, Shelby, Coach Reinhardt and Shipley are no longer with us.
After graduating from USL I worked my way up to Detroit in the automotive industry. I received my masters from the University of Detroit (1975). I worked for Chrysler Corporation for 33 years and retired in 1995. I continued to play basketball until 1983 when my legs couldn’t handle it any more. My wife and I now live in Pinehurst, North Carolina and play a lot of golf.
Coach Shipley gave me an opportunity to get an education when I didn’t have a lot to offer (one year of eligibility). He was tough but fair.
I will always treasure the experience and friends I had at USL.
