This is followed by his USL employment information. * * * * * LAFAYETTE – Funeral Services will be held at 2:00PM on Friday, May 18, 2018 in Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Mary Beatrice “B” Fleming Coussan who was born September 4, 1926 in Alexandria, LA. “B” passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on May 11, 2018 in Lafayette, LA. Burial will take place in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. She is survived by her daughter, Paula and son-in-law, Jerry King, and, daughter-in-law, Jo Ellen Coussan, who gave her love and devotion through the years. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Mike King (Malyn), Jenifer Knight (Michael), Cheri Coussan, Ashly Morgan (Phillip), Jean-Paul Coussan (Jennifer) and Angéle Roy (Jeremy) and thirteen great grandchildren, George Knight, Max and Mikko King, Jean-Jacques and Eloise Hunter, Ainsley, Annabelle and Amelia Morgan, George, Claire and Caroline Coussan and Brielle and Liliane Roy. She is preceded in death by her parents, P.J. and Edwina Fleming; four older brothers; her husband, Dr. G.L. Coussan and her son, Dr. George P. Coussan. “B” attended High School at Providence Academy. She was Homecoming Queen and was Valedictorian of her class. She was an accomplished pianist who had a radio show in her teens. She attended LSU where she met Louis, and always said when he earned his Ph. D she earned her PHT (Putting Hubby Through). After moving to Lafayette, she completed her BS Degree in Elementary Education and obtained her Master’s Degree in Education, both at ULL. She was a dedicated teacher in the Lafayette Public System teaching generations of students in fifth and sixth grade. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 18, 2018 from 11:00AM until time of service in Delhomme Funeral Home – Bertrand. A Rosary will be prayed at 1:00PM on Friday. The family would like to thank her friends from church, especially Barbara Enard and her neighbor, Robert Hargis for everything he did for “B”. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. G. Published in the The Advertiser from May 16 to May 17, 2018 * * * * * * Dr. Gaston Louis Coussan Initial year of employment at SLI – Sept. 1, 1956 He was hired as an assistant professor and by the 1961 – 62 school year had been promoted to Professor. He served as Head of the Education Department from 1967 until 1969 when he was named Director of the University College. All federal grants were administered by University College. June 8, 1970 the Career Opportunities Program for Teacher Training was funded, and as the director of the grant, he influenced the lives of hundreds of people who enrolled to become teachers. He became Dean of the College of Education on 9/1/1971 On 8/18/75, he left the Dean’s position to become a full-time professor. 8/30/84 retired from the University During the 84 – 85 year, he taught part-time for the college of education, until May, 1985 when he ended his teaching career. Started Acadiana Nuff, a Head Start program for the 6 parish area. Was instrumental in starting Trained Head Start Teachers to help them become certified Was a field evaluator for the U.S. Department of Education * * * * *
