Former Men’s Basketball: Starks honored as 1A’s top coachKelly McElroy, Daily Advertiser, March 23, 2014 Byron Starks was voted as the Class 1A Coach of the Year after leading the Lafayette Christian Knights to the Top 28 in only the third year’s of the program at the LHSAA level. / Leslie Westbrook/The AdvertiserCentral Catholic’s Meoshonti Knight and Christian Life Academy’s Johnathan Stove built their resumes by doing a variety of things for their respective teams. The two senior standouts can now add one more thing to their list of accomplishments. Knight and Stove headline the LSWA’s Class 1A All-State basketball teams selected by a panel of sportswriters. The 5-foot-8 Knight was selected as the MVP on the 1A girls squad after teaming with backcourt mate Randi Brown, also a first-team all-stater, to lead Morgan City-based Central Catholic to its first state title in girls basketball earlier this month. A University of Alabama signee, Knight averaged 18.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 4.6 steals per game for the Eagles. Stove, a 6-4 UL signee, led Christian Life to the 1A quarterfinals with 25.9 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.9 steals and two blocks a game. Central Catholic’s Jamarr Garrett and Lafayette Christian’s Bryon Starks claimed the Coach of the Year honors for the LSWA teams. Garrett’s CCMC squad compiled a 28-4 record. Starks led a LCA team to a 27-4 record, its first district title and to a trip to the semifinals in its third LHSAA season. Country Day coach Mike McGuire, who led the Cajuns to their second straight state title, also was nominated. Brown averaged 24.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 4.1 assists a game for CCMC. Cheyenne South of Tensas (28 points per game), senior Ty Henderson of Acadia (23 ppg.) and eighth grader Andrea Cournoyer of Merryville (28.9 ppg., 5.5 assists per game and 4.4 rebounds per game) complete the girls first team. Senior Scott Plaisance of Country Day (16.5 ppg., 10.5 rpg., four blocks per game), junior Brandon Sampson of Madison Prep (24.3 ppg., 6.1 rpg., 4.7 apg., 2.2 spg.), senior Antwine Baker of Arcadia (20 ppg., eight rpg., two bpg.) and sophomore Michael Layssard of Northwood (21.5 ppg., 12 rpg.) join Stove on the boys first team. Plaisance also is a Louisiana-Lafayette signee. The girls second-team is comprised of Katie Frith of Vermilion Catholic, Jazlyn Robertson of North Central, Kelsey Booth of Ouachita Christian, Doneisha Young of Southern Lab and Maya Trench of West St. John. Cameron Bingham of Delhi, Kenan Fontenot of Hamilton Christian, Jacob Broussard of Lafayette Christian, Delmond Landry of Ascension Catholic and Davauhnte Turner of Grambling Lab make up the boys second team.
