Golf: Cajuns Place Two On All-Tournament Team At SBC Golf Championship – Team Finishes in 4th place

SAUCIER, Miss. – The Louisiana golf team had three players finish in the top 10 at the 2014 Sun Belt Men’s Golf Championship on Wednesday with Fernando Cruz Valle and Thomas Strandemo earning all-tournament team honors at Grand Bear Golf Club.

Cruz Valle carded a final round score of 2-under par (70) to finish the event in fourth place at 4-under (212). The freshman posted a score of under par in all three rounds for the first time this season as he recorded his fourth top 5 finish of the year.

Strandemo finished one shot back of Cruz Valle in a tie for fifth at 3-under (213) after matching the best round score of the tournament with a 68 (-4) in the final round. The score marks the first time that Strandemo has finished an event with a score under par while the fifth place finish ties the career-best finish for the sophomore.

“I am very proud of the way the team finished the final round of the season,” head coach Theo Sliman said. “I am really impressed with not only Fernando and Thomas, but Haraldur (Magnus) as well. It was nice to have Fernando and Thomas on the all-tournament team. They were the only two underclassmen on the team so that speaks towards the future. It’s disappointing that we had three guys finish in the top 10 and we weren’t in contention for the tournament. This is a lesson that our team can use next year.”

Magnus notched a score of 3-under (69) in the final round to move up seven spots into a tie for 10th at 1-over (217). The top 10 finish is the fourth of the spring for Magnus, while the 69 is the fifth round in the 60’s for the sophomore this season.

As a team, the Cajuns recorded a score of 7-under (281) in the final 18 holes to move up two spots and finish in fourth place with a three-round score of 12-over (876).

No. 44 Georgia State held on to win the event with a final score of 1-under (863) edging out South Alabama by a stroke after a surge by the Jaguars who carded a score of 8-under (280) in the final round to finish with a 36-hole score of even par (864). UT Arlington (1, 865), Louisiana (12, 876) and Texas State (20, 884) round out the top 5 teams.

Texas State’s Stuart Smallwood was the wire-to-wire individual champion finishing with a score of 8-under (208).

Ross Davis and Christian Verrougstraete rounded out the scoring for Louisiana. Davis ended up in a tie for 48th at 19-over (235), while Verrougstrate finished in 50th at 26-over (242).
