Delmon McNabb, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully at home on May 8, 2024, at the age of 78, in Lafayette, LA, after a lengthy illness. Born on September 8, 1945, in Leesville, LA, Delmon was a man of faith and humility, whose presence brought comfort and joy to all who knew him. His kind, soft-spoken, gentle nature and his positive demeanor inspired the lives of many. Delmon saw the good in everyone and was the perfect example of what a family man should be.

Delmon was devoted to his beloved wife, Dianne, and their children, Mackey and Amy. His role as a grandfather was one he held dear, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom for his grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

Delmon was a proud alumnus of Louisiana State University, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education, becoming a teacher and later joining the LA Department of Education. His academic achievements laid the groundwork for a successful career as owner of Louisiana Spring Service for 22 years, followed by an additional 22 years as a Shelter Insurance Agent.

Outside of his professional life, Delmon was an accomplished athlete in baseball, football, and track & field in his younger years. He was recognized for his outstanding abilities in javelin, a sport that stayed with him throughout his life. Delmon won many javelin honors while at LSU, becoming state, regional, and national javelin champion, and was elected to the National All-American Track & Field Team. He was inducted into the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979, and later into the Louisiana Senior Olympics Hall of Fame in 2003.

Delmon took pride in coaching Mackey’s baseball teams over the years, selflessly devoting his time and efforts. He was passionate about his yard, working countless hours to keep it meticulously manicured. He loved going to the movies and watching old westerns at home.

Delmon was a devout Christian with a Godly influence and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Lafayette. In Delmon’s own words, “Jesus is in control”.

Delmon is survived by his wife, Dianne Lorio McNabb; his son Mackey McNabb and wife Allison; daughter Amy Rogers; grandchildren Ky, Jacob, and Lindsey Conque; Eli, Jude, Annie, and Joshua McNabb; great-granddaughter Kimber Conque; brother Darrell McNabb and wife Patty; nephews Dustin and Chase McNabb; brother-in-law Al Lorio; sister-in-law Amber Lorio; nieces Annie and Abby Lorio.

Delmon was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Madelene McNabb, and his in-laws, Alvin and Annie Lorio.

Delmon will be deeply missed by those whose lives he touched. He leaves our world a better place for the love he gave his family and his teachings of family values. Though we are all heartbroken to not have him here on earth any longer, his memory will be with us forever. It will be a joyous reunion when we all eventually join him in Heaven.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Martin & Castille Funeral Home SOUTHSIDE location, 600 E. Farrel Road, Lafayette. Visitation will continue on Friday, May 17, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, with a funeral service to begin at 2:00 p.m., followed by interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park.

Pallbearers are Mackey McNabb, Darrell McNabb, Dustin McNabb, Jim Rogers, Frankie Noble, Roy Courville, and Jacob Conque. Honorary pallbearers are Clifton “Dugie” Dugas, Ronnie Gill, Richard Hebert, and Al Lorio.

In lieu of flowers, Delmon would appreciate contributions to the LSU Alumni Association and Tiger Athletic Foundation in his honor.

Del is throwing the javelin at approximate counter reading 146 and 255. He and Ed Red, Rice QB and Lafayette High School graduate in USA jersey became friends at that meet.
As Executive Director of the Louisiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance for some of the years while Del was the Health and Physical Education Supervisor for the Louisiana State Department of Education, we worked closely on many projects. No matter the situation, one could always feel his kindness, consideration of others, and well-thought out solutions for all involved. He may be remembered by many as a Javelin Champion, but to me, I always thought of him as a champion person.
