Harkins Tabbed UL Women’s Tennis Coach

Jan. 10, 2011 ragincajuns.com

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns have hired Gregory Harkins as the new women’s tennis coach as announced by UL Director of Athletics David Walker on Monday. His hiring is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.
Harkins comes to Louisiana after serving as the assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams at the College of Charleston since 2008.

In 2010, he helped lead the Cougars women’s team to the Southern Conference tournament title with a record of 20-10 and a 10-0 mark in conference play. It was also the second straight year that the women claimed a tournament title and a NCAA bid.

Both squads were the league’s regular season SoCon champions in 2010 after cracking the top-60 NCAA rankings for the first time in school history.

Before the start of the 2010 season, three members of the women’s team were individually ranked in the ITA preseason poll and a doubles team for the Cougars was ranked as high as No. 37, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The tennis program also maintained high academic standards while under Harkins’ direction. The men’s and women’s team finished with a GPA above 3.0 in 2010. The women’s team achieved the highest GPA in the athletics program and earned All-American Honors from the ITA. The men posted the second highest GPA out of the men’s athletic programs.

Harkins joined the Cougars’ coaching staff following a two and a half year stint as the Director of Junior Development at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston. There, he set up structured programs for juniors from 3-18 years of age, gave private lessons to both juniors and adults and worked tournament operations at the numerous tournaments the Family Circle Tennis Center holds each year.

Before his appointment at the Family Circle Tennis Center, Harkins was the Assistant Professional at the Tennis Corporation of America Sporting Club at Windy Hill in Atlanta, Ga. from 2002-05. There, he performed coaching and teaching duties for all levels and gave private and group lessons.

Harkins earned varsity letters during his playing career at Georgia State University, graduating in 1992. He was also the State of Georgia’s number one ranked doubles player.
