Baseball: Conrad And Baranik Named To Louisville Slugger All-America TeamsLAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns second baseman Jace Conrad garnered first team All-American accolades and Carson Baranik received third team mention on Thursday as Collegiate Baseball magazine unveiled the 2014 Louisville Slugger All-America team.
Conrad, the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, is the first Ragin’ Cajun named first team All-American since Phil Devey was bestowed the honor by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in 1999. The junior is the third first team All-American in program history.
“This is quite an honor for Jace and Carson,” head coach Tony Robichaux said. “To be selected as one of the best players in the country at your position speaks to the kind of season that they have had. This honor is great not only for them as individuals, but also for our team to earn this kind of recognition. We have had a special season and it’s because of the work that both Jace and Carson put in all year long. Baseball is a sport that pays you back, and both of these guys are getting paid back for their hard work and effort.”
Conrad carries a career-best .367average as Louisiana (53-7) begins NCAA Regional action. His 84 hits top the squad while his 55 RBI are second highest.
The Lafayette native ranks Top 100 nationally in average, doubles, hits, runs, RBI, slugging percentage, total bases and stolen bases.
Baranik led the Cajuns pitching staff with 10 regular season victories en route to collecting Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year honors. The junior righty has held opponents to a .233 average and 81 hits over 92 2/3 innings pitched and struck out 69.
One of only 39 pitchers nationwide with at least 10 victories, Baranik has two complete games, two complete game shutouts and three combined shutouts to his credit.
The Cajuns have had 22 All-Americans in school history with the addition of Conrad and Baranik this season.
Louisiana opens play in the 2014 NCAA Lafayette Regional on Friday at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field in a 6 p.m. contest against Jackson State.
