Track: Cajuns land NVHS star

Bruce Brown • bbrown@theadvertiser.com • April 14, 2010

Morgan Breaux looks like the perfect addition to a program on the way up.

Breaux, a smooth sprinter from North Vermilion High, has signed with Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun track and field program to continue her career with UL.

“It has always been a set goal of mine,” said Breaux, who finished third in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the LHSAA State Meet in 2009. “I had always hoped to run track in college.”

Breaux has consistently been near the top of the list of sprinters in Louisiana. As a sophomore in 2008, she placed fourth in the 100 (12.18) and second in the 200 (25.33) in Class 3A. Last year, her times of 12.21 and 25.28 both earned third place in her events.

As a senior, Breaux owns a hand-timed 11.89 in the 100 and a 26.13 in the 200 as the outdoor season heads for its conclusion. It’s the kind of steady excellence that attracts college coaches.

“Actually,” Breaux said, “recruiting was really tough. At first, I wanted to be away from home. But friends and family who attended UL talked to me. They helped me make the decision to stay closer to home.”

UL coach Charlie Mahfouz, his staff and team also had a hand in the process.

“When I took my visit last September, and met the team and the coaches, I liked the atmosphere,” Breaux said. “I felt comfortable there. They told me they were building a team, and that I was a good asset who could help the team a lot.”

The Cajuns plan to keep Breaux in the short sprints, as well as the 4×100 and 4×200 relays. Now all that’s left is to finish her high school career on a high note.

“Last year was probably my best year,” said Breaux, who has run varsity track since in 8th grade. “My junior year, I decided to take a break from softball and focus more attention on track — focus on one thing at one time.

“Track was always primary, and if I would be at a softball game I would miss track practice.”

Softball lost a speedy outfielder and pinch runner, but track is Breaux’s ticket to an education.

“I was always around Barrett,” Breaux said of former Patriot state champion hurdler Barrett Nugent, now an All-American at LSU. “He helped me with my block work.

“This year, I want to better my times. I’ve got an 11.89 hand-timed 100, so I think I can get under 12 there. The 200 isn’t my best event, so my coach doesn’t start out the season running me there. That gives me more time to train so I can be in good enough shape to feel good running it.”

Breaux’s speed and work ethic to get faster should add up to a building block for the Cajuns.
