Home Phone: -- Men’s Basketball: Andrews, Mitchell sparking Cajuns Joshua Parrott • jparrott@theadvertiser.com • February 3, 2010 In UL’s hour of need, freshmen Raymone Andrews and Javan Mitchell gave the men’s basketball program a glimpse of what is expected to be a bright future for the two youngsters. Andrews and Mitchell both enjoyed career nights in Saturday’s 72-67 win over Sun Belt Conference foe UL Monroe on the road. Known more of his defensive skills as a point guard, Andrews poured in a career-best 17 points on 3-of-3 shooting from the floor and an 11-of-14 effort from the free-throw line. The former St. Thomas Aquinas standout added four rebounds and two steals in the first road victory in league action this season for the Cajuns (9-12, 6-4). Mitchell, a native of St. Martinville, scored a career-high 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. The 6-foot-9 forward made 2-of-4 shots from the field and 6-of-6 free throws. On the other end of the floor, Mitchell played solid interior defense against ULM forward Rudy Turner. The burly post player had 12 points and nine rebounds but committed six of his team’s 14 turnovers. “Those guys played big,” UL coach Robert Lee said. “Raymone has been doing a tremendous job and continues to do a good job defending and really ran the team well over at Monroe. He stepped up and shot free throws extremely well, and that was good to see. “Javan gave us some big minutes. We needed him to defend Rudy Turner and he did a good job at that. He also made some big baskets for us when we needed it.” Saturday’s performance against ULM was the best effort for both Andrews and Mitchell this season and gives the Cajuns even more optimism going into this week’s two-game home stand. Currently second in the West Division, UL plays host to Florida International (7-17, 4-7) on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. before playing Arkansas-Little Rock (6-15, 2-8) on Saturday night. “I was very pleased to see our young guys do that (against ULM),” Lee said. “You can see that there are a lot of talented young players in the league.” Odds and Ends
