A native of Lafayette, Arthur died at home Sunday afternoon July 19, 2009, after a lengthy illness.

Arthur was a retired banker who played a prominent role in the financial and commercial development of Lafayette and the surrounding area for over 42 years until his retirement in 1988.

He began his banking career in August of 1946 after returning from naval service after World War II. Over the forty-two plus years of employment, Arthur worked at Guaranty Bank and Trust Company and its successor banks, Premier Bank and Bank One, now known as J. P. Morgan Chase Bank.

Over his career he worked in most all areas of the bank, starting in the Bookkeeping Department and working his way to the Presidency of the bank in March of 1967. Under his leadership, the bank grew from a small community bank of $43,000,000.00 in assets to an $831,000,000.00 bank in 1984. Guaranty Bank grew from the number two bank in the market to the seventh largest in the state over this period of time. Arthur and his team of bankers at Guaranty, Premier and Bank One played a major role in the development and success of many local businesses for over forty-two years.

The Junior Chamber of Commerce awarded him the Boss of the Year Award. He was the finance chairman of Radio Free Europe and served on many United Way of Acadiana committees. In 1973 he was elected board member and President of the Louisiana Bankers Association and served as State Vice President of the American Bankers Association. He also served on the boards of the Business and Industrial Development Corporation, the Lafayette Area Boys Scouts of America and was awarded the Outstanding Citizen Award, the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross. He served as President of the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, and on the board of directors of Citizens for a Better Louisiana and Louisiana Business and Industry.

Arthur was active in Lafayette Mardi Gras, serving as King Richard Coeur de Lion, leader of the Order of the Troubadours at the Lafayette Town House in 1968. He was also a member of the Krewe of Gabriel.

Arthur was an avid Ragin Cajun baseball fan. He was a member of the “Dirty Dozen” supporters who always sat on the top row below the press box. He was in Omaha, Nebraska when the Cajuns made their 2000 run at the National Championship.
