Mahfouz to head UL track

Joshua Parrott jparrott@theadvertiser.com June 21, 2008

Charlie Mahfouz spent this past season as a volunteer assistant coach for the UL men’s and women’s track and field programs, working with the javelin, sprints and hurdles.

Now he’s set to be on the payroll at his alma mater.

Mahfouz was announced as the new Ragin’ Cajun men’s and women’s track head coach on Friday. Pending approval by UL’s System Board of Supervisors, Mahfouz will start on the job effective July 1.

This will be the first collegiate head coaching job for Mahfouz, who won six Louisiana high school state championships in 18 years as a head track coach. He spent nine years apiece at Eunice High and Opelousas High.

Mahfouz, a 1975 UL graduate, could not be reached on his cell phone Friday night.

“Coach Charlie Mahfouz brings a wealth of knowledge and success to our track program,” UL athletic director David Walker said. “He is committed to ensuring that our student-athletes succeed not only in track and field but also in the classroom. We must build our track program with student-athletes that can be academically successful, and coach Mahfouz is committed to that challenge.

“We are very excited that coach Mahfouz has agreed to return to his alma mater and lead our track program.”

Mahfouz replaces Steve Silvey, who was hired last June but resigned in April citing differences with university administration. Mahfouz’s daughter, Allie Mahfouz, recently completed her freshman year on the Cajun women’s track team.

In his first year with the Cajuns, Mahfouz helped three student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Division I Mideast Outdoor Track and Field Regional. Roderick Houston qualified in both the 100 and 200 meters, while Stacey Fuller and Taryn Simmons advanced in the 400-meter hurdles.

Under Mahfouz’s guidance, Fuller posted a time of 52.47 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships to clinch the conference championship. Simmons logged a time of 1:00.20 in the 400-meter hurdles at the SBC Outdoor Track and Field Championships to establish a new school record.

Mahfouz credits his coaching success to former Cajun coaches Charles Lancon and Leon Johnson. He started his coaching career at Eunice High. From 1983-92, he led the Bobcats to five St. Landry Parish and district championships and won regional and Class 3A state titles from 1990-92.

After nine years in Eunice, Mahfouz went to Opelousas High. He led the Tigers to the St. Landry Parish championship in each of his nine years with the program. His teams also won six district and five regional titles.

Opelousas High finished as the Class 4A runner-up in Mahfouz’s first year in ’94. The Tigers later won state titles from 1998-2000.
