Dr. Brown served as the Golf Coach in 1960. From 1958-70 he served as Head of the Health & Physical Education Department and continued as a faculty member until 1974.
He provided much guidance to the department and was an administrator who accomplished a great deal with very few resources. He took pride in the outstanding faculty members in the department and worked with them in a positive manner.
Dr. Brown was a member of the University of Tennessee Athletic Hall of Fame and had the unique distinction of playing fullback and defensive end on the football team while doubling as a member of the UT marching band. When the football team went in for halftime, Dr. Brown joined the band – if they were performing.
He remained close to his Cajun friends, even though he moved back to Cleveland, TN after his retirement.
Clyde Wolf, Ruth Wolf, Marilyn Dugas and I attended his funeral in Cleveland, TN.
He was an outstanding educator, gentleman, and close friend.

Having known Dr. Fred Brown for many years prior to his passing, I feel moved to write a few words about this fine man that I came to know…I was introduced to him by Dr, Louis Bowers…Dr. Brown (or “Bo” as many of us came to know him) and I visited in his office for over a half an hour. We discussed little about what I was planing to do, other than attend LSU to pursue an advanced degree. We talked more about his life and mine to that point in time… I have met very few individuals who have been more friendly, gracious, sincere and interesting than Dr. Brown. He was never a domineering or demanding individual. He caused you to respect and admire him by just being himself.
He called me two weeks later and offered me a position in the PE Department at U.S.L….As the years under his guidance passed, I came to respect and honor Dr. Brown beyond words. There could have been no kinder, understanding or magnanimous mentor or confidant. Beyond his deep understanding of his fellow man, he was a gifted leader. He was also a Hall of Fame athlete in his formative years.
One never knows how much we might influence and touch those who become a part of our life or we of theirs. I can only say, with great respect and humility, that Dr. Fred Brown became a very significant and influential part of mine. He is much missed.
