Golf: Chip Shots – Ace by Judy Cox and David Duhon ChampionshipDan McDonald, The Advertiser, August 20, 2014
CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS: Congratulations to David Duhon for his impressive win in last weekend’s Lafayette City Championships. Duhon, who won the 2007 city title, finished with a six-under-par 138 total for the Saturday round at The Wetlands and the Sunday finale at Hebert Municipal, finishing six strokes ahead of the field. Duhon had a five-birdie, no-bogey 67 round on Sunday at Hebert to close the door on the rest of the 20-player championship flight. Buddy Schilling, who closed strongly with a final-day 69 and birdied four of the final seven holes, was the only other championship flight player to match par with an even-par 144. The tournament’s other winners included Lauren Aillet, who won her second city ladies’ title with a 70-74–144 score; John Broussard with a 71-74–145 tally to capture his second straight seniors (age 62 and over) crown; and Steve Andrews, who finished at 10-over 154 to win the open flight in a scorecard playoff with Roy Vanhaverbeke and Donnie Chauvin. A total of 54 players took part in the event, slightly down from the last two years, and Lafayette Parks and Recreation director Gerald Boudreaux said that the city will make a concerted effort to increase participation in the event next year. “This was a good turnout, but it doesn’t represent the interest in golf locally,” Boudreaux said. “We’re going to continue to do whatever we can to make the city championships a quality event and one that players will enjoy competing in.” (“Making the Turn” appears each Wednesday in the Daily Advertiser.
