Men’s Basketball: Bureau steps up for UL basketball

When times get tough, youll find UL coach Robert Lee barking at his players about the importance of doing the little things.
Stay mentally focused to fight through adversity. Box out your man and grab the rebound.Maintain proper spacing on the floor.

In Wednesdays 72-62 win over Florida International, freshman Travis Bureau worked on the latter. The result was a night to remember as the 6-foot-7 forward scored a game- and career-high 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the Sun Belt Conference contest. He hit two 3-pointers in the opening half and added three more in the first 10 minutes of the second half before missing his last attempt from the outside.

Travis did a good job of going to spots on the floor where we could find him, said Lee, whose Cajuns (10-12 overall, 6-5 SBC) entered Wednesday having lost five of their last seven. He got going after hitting a couple of early shots.
Bureaus career night helped UL shake off the frustration of a 57-51 loss to Middle Tennessee State on Jan. 31 and moved the Cajuns to 5-8 this season on the road.
Senior guard Maurice Barksdale finished with his best statistical game of the season with 11 points, three steals and two assists in 15 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Elijah Millsap added 10 points, while sophomores LaRyan Gary and Courtney Wallace chipped in eight apiece.

Coupled with an 87-66 win at Troy on Sunday, UL has now won back-to-back road games for only the second time this season. The Cajuns won at UL-Monroe and Hawaii in December.

Senior David Dees, who scored four points Wednesday in his first game back since not playing against MTSU for family reasons, said the Cajuns are doing their best to handle the ups and downs this season. UL was in first place in the West Division after opening 4-0 in conference before losing four straight Sun Belt games.

Now the Cajuns are tied for first in the West with Arkansas-Little Rock (14-8, 6-5) entering Sundays game at Denver. Only two games separate first and fifth in the West.

You learn to enjoy the challenges just as much as you enjoy the successes, Dees said. If we can overcome these challenges it will do nothing but make us better people.

With less than a month left in the regular season, theres still plenty to be determined in the Sun Belt Conference West and East Division standings. Heres a rundown of each division race.
