LAFAYETTE-Louisianas Ragin Cajuns baseball team rebounded on Wednesday night with a 3-1 victory over in-state rival Southeastern Louisiana at M.L. Tigue Moore Field. With the win, the Cajuns improve to 4-6 on the year.

Michael Cook (Lafayette, La.) was stellar in his first career start. The freshman worked 7-plus innings, scattering five hits four singles. Cook was responsible for one unearned run. He walked just one batter, while fanning five. Cook retired seven consecutive batters, before allowing a hit in the top of the eighth inning.

Justin Robichaux (Crowley, La.) entered the game in the eighth inning. The sophomore hurler worked 2.0 scoreless innings en route to his third save of the season. Robichaux retired all six batters he faced, recording a pair of strikeouts.

The Cajuns were led offensively by Scott Hawkins (Collierville, Tenn.). The junior had a pair of extra-base hits on the night. Hawkins doubled in the sixth inning and recorded his first home run of the season in the seventh inning. His two-RBI homer proved to be the difference in the game for the Cajuns.

Robichaux also recorded two hits on the night. He and Matt Goulas (New Iberia, La.) combined for the Cajuns other two runs scored on the night.

The Cajuns were the first on the scoreboard. In the first inning, Goulas led off the inning with a single through the right side of the infield. Robichaux followed with a single to centerfield. Matt Hicks (Houston, Texas) successfully moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Cy Primeaux (Lafayette, La.) loaded the bases with a walk. Blaine LaFleur (Opelousas, La.) worked the count full and drew an RBI walk to put the Cajuns on the scoreboard, 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning.

Southeastern Louisiana tied the score in the top of the fifth. After the Cajuns recorded two outs, the Lions got a runner in scoring position with a single and an errant throw on a pickoff. An RBI single to centerfield knotted the score at 1-1.

The Cajuns jumped ahead in the bottom of the seventh inning on one swing. Hawkins blasted his first home run of the season. The two-run shot hit off of the scoreboard, giving the Cajuns a 3-1 advantage.

The score remained 3-1 as Cook and Robichaux combined to keep the Lions batters at bay.

The Ragin Cajuns baseball team returns to action this weekend as they begin Sun Belt Conference play. The Cajuns will start their title defense with a three-game weekend series against Arkansas State. First pitch in the series is slated for Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
