Ivan Baker, who lettered as a pole vaulter in 1938. He served from June 1942 to Sept, ’45 in the Army and was a first lieutentant when he got out. He served in France and Germany under George Patton as a forward artillery observer from Nov. 1944 to July 1945 and was awarded the Bronze Star for actions under fire in Alsace in late 1944. He was also in the group under Patton that rushed to the relief of Bastogne during the Battle of Bulge. Ironically, both his daughters (my sister-in law was born while Mr. Baker was overseas) married men with considerable German ancestry. He never held it aginst us, though.

Herb Stein, son in law and track performer 1968 & 1969, provided the following information from Ivan’s daughter, Becky Baker:
Mr. Ivan Baker who died about a year ago, was a USL track letterman in 1938, pole vaulting around 13 feet at a time when the world record was around 15 feet.
