My name is Desi Chatman, and I go by Desi, Dez, or D. I am a member of the Ragin Cajun softball and track teams. I am a senior in softball and a junior in track.

I am a 2003 graduate from Ovey Comeaux High School in Lafayette, where I played basketball and did track. I am proud to be on the Ragin Cajun softball and track teams. Could not represent any other colors better than RED and BLACK.

Cajuns sweep WKU with 2-0 home victory

Rightfielder Desi Chatman provided the offense.
Brittany Cuevas and Shari Sigur added the defense from the circle and by the time Western Kentucky base running mistakes had ruined two scoring opportunities, UL’s Lady Cajuns escaped with a 2-0 victory and a three-game sweep over the visiting Hilltoppers.

Chatman gave the Lady Cajuns all of the runs they would need with a homerun to right field off hard-luck losing pitcher Jennifer Kempf. Kempf surrendered only four hits in the game, with Chatman’s “big fly” the only safety to leave the infield.

Cajun centerfielder Karli was the only UL player to collect multiple hits with a bunt single in the third and another infield single in the fifth.
The Lady Cajuns only other hit of the game was a bunt single by second baseman Tara Hamilton to lead off the third inning, one of two frames in which the Lady Cajuns left the bases loaded without scoring a run.

Hamilton’s sacrifice fly plating pinch runner Courtney Trahan gave the hosts their only other run and secured the final 2-0 margin.

“When these girls believe in themselves they can accomplis anything,” a happy and somewhat relieved Cajun coach Steffni Lotied commented. “Of course, you love a sweep and we felt like we had to make up for the poor showing against Middle Tennessee.”

Cuevas picked up win number 20 on the season despite leaving the game with an injury and two outs in the fifth, when Western third baseman Becky Horesky drilled a line drive off of her right foot, forcing Sigur’s relief apearance.

Sigur immediately dodged a bullet allowing an infield single to the first batter she faced. Fortunately for the Lady Cajuns, Horesky overran second base resulting in a put out to end the threat.

With the sweep the Lady Cajuns are assured of at least a tie for the conference lead approaching next weekend’s break from league play.

“Before we had this many teams in the conference we would deliberately schedule a bye weekend from conference play,” Lotief added. “I am glad to have it now,” she continued. “It gives us a little breather and gives the girls a chance to spend some time with their families and to catch up with their school work.”

The Lady Cajuns will next be in action Wednesday with a 4 p.m. doubleheader against visiting Northwestern State.
