Football – UL Notes: McCoy ready for SBC opener

Joshua Parrott jparrott@theadvertiser.com October 8, 2009

In addition to making big hits as a linebacker for UL, Daylon McCoy calls himself a modern-day Shakespeare.

McCoy, though, has made a name for himself the past two seasons on the field for the Ragin’ Cajuns.

The junior from Texas leads the team this season with 3.5 tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries and is second on the squad with 23 tackles going into Saturday’s Sun Belt opener against North Texas.

Before running off to class Tuesday night, McCoy spoke with The Daily Advertiser about this season and his interests away from football.

On what he has learned about his team so far:

I believe that we’re pretty resilient, especially after that last game (a 55-0 loss at Nebraska).

We’ve come back pretty strong. It was hurtful losing like we did, but I think we responded well. Defensively we had a good week (of practice).

On his favorite hobbies away from football:

Outside of watching film, I like to read and write poetry and watch Real Housewives of Atlanta and Desperate Housewives. I’m a self-proclaimed modern-day Shakespeare.

Reach me at a better time, and I’ll quote you some of my work.

On something people might not know about him:

I have a twin sister. I am her older brother, but she pretty much runs the relationship.

On playing against a team from his home state:

I know a few of those (North Texas) guys and have good relationships. We’re not playing in Texas like we did last year, but there are a lot of people I know that are coming down for the game. It’s going to be a pretty good time.

On getting to start over in Sun Belt play:

That’s the great thing about it. We’re 0-0 right now. I’m pretty confident where we are.

We’d rather be 4-0 or 3-1, but we’re 2-2 and have a pretty good shot at postseason play. We’re sitting in a good position right now.

New look
The Cajuns expect to start junior Maurice Rolle Jr. at free safety and senior Phillip Nevels at strong safety against the Mean Green, head coach Rickey Bustle said after Wednesday’s practice.

Rolle, who has two interceptions on the year, started the first two games of the season before hurting his back.

Nevels has started the past two games, once at strong safety and once at free safety.

Bustle added that senior Gerren Blount and sophomores Chris Richard and Lance Kelley will play this weekend.

Blount, the team’s starting free safety in 2007 and ’08, missed the Nebraska game with a stress fracture in his right leg but has been moving well in practice with a sleeve on that leg.

Richard started the season’s first two games at strong safety before hurting his ankle. Kelley sat out against Nebraska with a back injury.

State ties
The Cajuns have 13 players on their active roster with Texas connections. That’s the third-most players from one state on the team behind Louisiana (37) and Florida (16).

UNT has six players with Louisiana ties: defensive linemen John Weber (New Orleans) and Kyle White (New Orleans), receivers Jamaal Jackson (Northwestern State), Darius Carey (New Orleans), Jamel Jackson (New Orleans) and Oklahoma transfer Tyler Stradford (New Orleans).

Odds and Ends
Weber and White are former Cajun recruits, as was UNT true freshman tight end Austin Fitzpatrick from Friendswood, Texas “ White played his prep ball at McDonogh 35 with current UL nose guard Derreck Dean. The true freshman made three tackles in his only action of the season against Alabama “ Carey was a high school teammate of current Cajun receiver Javone Lawson at Helen Cox and racked up 2,513 and 35 touchdowns as a senior quarterback “ Jamaal Jackson leads UNT with 22 catches for 210 yards and one score this season and is third in the Sun Belt in receptions per game (5.5). The junior is eight in the league in receiving yards per game (52.5) “ UNT cornerbacks coach Carlton Buckels played at LSU from 1989-92. He was a team captain and special teams MVP before serving as a graduate assistant under head coaches Gerry DiNardo and Nick Saban.
