Home Phone: 561-441-3846 Football: Chery to Start Packers’ Preseason Finale www.ragincajuns.com posted Sept. 1, 2010 Former Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns football standout Jason Chery has been named the starting kick/punt returner for the Green Bay Packers preseason finale with the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, Sept. 2. Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy announced Monday that Chery would handle all of the return duties, both punts and kicks. Will Blackmon, No. 1 on the depth chart at both return positions, has been sidelined since last Thursday night’s game as he works his way back from a significant knee injury sustained last season. “You can’t not be excited about his punt return in the Indianapolis game,” McCarthy said. “The young man hasn’t been given a whole lot of opportunity in the game, so we’re going to find out.” Last Thursday against Indianapolis, Chery became the first Packer in 15 years to return a punt for a touchdown in a preseason game. He fielded a punt at the Packers 25-yard line and after bursting through the middle of the field held off a group of Colts for the 75-yard touchdown. In the Cajuns 59-30 road victory at North Texas, Chery had 335 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns � in the first half. His five touchdowns tie a school and conference record for touchdowns and points in a game. Chery had just seven touches in the first half, but scored five times. He hit pay dirt on a 97-yard kickoff return, an 81-yard run and caught scoring passes of 17, 49 and 57 yards. Chery became the first player in school history with three runs of at least 80 yards in a career. Chery�s 97-yard kickoff return is the fifth longest kickoff return in Sun Belt history. It was the first kickoff return for a touchdown by the Cajuns since 2004. Chery also had a 34-yard kickoff return to total 131 yards on two returns. He finished the game with 339 all-purpose yards. It is the second consecutive week that Chery has been named Sun Belt Player of the Week. He is currently fourth in the nation in all-purpose yards, averaging 188.8 yards per game. Chery totaled 318 all-purpose yards last Saturday. He gained 92 yards on two rushes (including an 87-yard touchdown run), 96 yards on six receptions (including a 74-yard touchdown catch) and 130 yards on kickoff returns. * * * * * * * * * * Football: Chery explodes on deep route in scrimmage August 17, 2006 – Jason Chery was waiting for the opportunity he was presented Wednesday morning. His first thought: Don’t drop it. Chery, considered the fastest member of the UL squad, got behind the secondary and took the high-arching pass in full stride and went untouched the final 25 yards. “That felt good,” said Chery, a product of West Palm Beach, Fla., who caught seven passes in a reserve role last season. “We call it a crack route, kind of a quick stop and cut in toward the middle.” “Nobody was going to catch me,” said Chery, whose parents are of Haitian descent. “But in practice sometimes I choke. I kept telling myself I can’t drop this ball no matter what. If I fall down, I’m holding onto the ball.” HEAT: Temperature at the 8:35 a.m. start of Wednesday’s scrimmage was 91 degrees with 59 percent humidity for a 104 heat index. That index reached 111 at one point and the temperature topped out at 99 on the Cajun Field surface. CURE FOR THE HEAT: Go swimming. The Cajuns were originally scheduled to hold an afternoon practice session following the scrimmage, as part of their alternate-day two-a-day schedule. Instead, Bustle had the players go to their position meetings dressed for a shorts-only practice and sprung a surprise, taking the team to the pool at Bourgeois Hall mid-afternoon. The team had approximately 45 minutes of pool time before lightning from thunderstorms that struck the area forced them out of the pool. KICKING UPDATE: Among the 20 kicking plays during the scrimmage were four kickoffs, and Cajun kickers Brit Framel and Stokka Brown combined to put all four into the end zone. Framel’s first kick went six yards deep and Brown’s second effort sailed a yard away from the end line. Framel, UL’s returning punter, averaged 40 yards on four punt with a long of 47. Drew Edmiston had a 46-yarder but wasn’t as consistent, averaging only 30 yards per punt. One of the punts was returned for what would have likely been a touchdown by Michael Adams. The play was blown dead after Adams broke through the initial coverage and veered toward the sideline. The senior from Dallas had seven returns for a team-high 9.4 average last season. Edmiston was solid on three-of-four field goals from past 40 yards, hitting from 47 and missing wide right from 48. Brown was two-of-four with successes from 47 and 42 yards. HURTS: Freshman kicker Tyler Albrecht was held out of the scrimmage with a sore leg, one of seven players who did not take part in the session. No probable starters missed the workout. Offensively, center Brad Bryant (knee), running back Matt Dupre (shoulder), wide receiver Verlin Moore (toe) and tight end Brody Bozeman (back) were sidelined, while linebacker Jonathon Vance and safety Philip Walker (stinger) did not take part in the scrimmage. TODAY: The Cajuns don’t have a morning practice for only the second time in fall camp (there was no morning practice Sunday), and will work out at 3:30 p.m. The team is scheduled for two practices Friday at 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and its second full-scale scrimmage Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Originally published August 17, 2006
