Home Phone: -- Football: Assistant leaves UL for Rutgers Brady Aymond • baymond@theadvertiser.com • March 12, 2009 Choking back tears, UL running backs coach Brian Jenkins told the Ragin’ Cajun football team that Wednesday would be his last day wearing vermilion and white. Jenkins was scheduled to depart Wednesday night for his new destination – New Jersey – as he accepted the wide receivers coaching position at Rutgers. The turnaround was quick as Jenkins accepted the position earlier in the day, then headed out to coach his final Cajun practice. “It was something that came by surprise,” Jenkins said. “When (Rutgers) coach (Tony) Schiano called me, he was direct, straight-forward. I know he’s a no-nonsense guy. “We talked a little bit, everything was right. I discussed it with my wife, several people, and I just felt that this was good for me.” Jenkins joined the UL staff when Rickey Bustle arrived and has coached the running backs since 2002. Under his watch, Jenkins cultivated All-Sun Belt tailback Tyrell Fenroy into a four-time 1,000-yard rusher. Bustle announced Jenkins’ move at the close of practice, then Jenkins addressed the team. “It’s very tough to break it to the players,” Jenkins said. “A lot of these players I’ve recruited. I’ve spent eight years here so I’ve watched them come in as freshmen and leave as men. “So, it’s very tough, because I’m leaving young men that I’m comfortable with.” Jenkins said it took a special place and a big opportunity for him to leave Lafayette. “I always told coach and my family that it would take a special place for me to go and when the call came, I just knew that this was the place,” Jenkins said. “I’m really looking forward to it. I think it’s a step forward in my life to help me get to where I want to get in this profession.” * * * * * * * * * Assistant Football Coach since 2001 on the Bustle staff. Football: Jenkins, Cajun coaches headed to special football camp July 14, 2006 – CajunBlog by Dan McDonald Dan McDonald UL assistant football coach Brian Jenkins has said for years he wanted to do something to give back to his Fort Lauderdale, Fla., hometown. “There are a lot of kids who don¹t have the finances to attend some of the big-time football camps,” Jenkins said. “This gives them a chance to see what they¹re like, and to get some experience and coaching from college coaches.” The camp runs all day Saturday at the Oakland Park Sports Complex. The younger kids will take part in the morning and the high-school age in the afternoon. In addition to on-field football, Jenkins said that break-out sessions will involve doctors and other individuals to talk on health issues, academics and life skills. Parents are also free to take part. Some of the football names Jenkins has involved include wide receiver Isaac Bruce of the St. Louis Rams and former NFL players Michael Timpson, James Bostick and Otis Mounds. A couple of Miami Dolphins staffers, a handful of other college coaches and South Florida-area high school coaches will join the Cajun staff to stage the camp. :”Some of these guys came up in a rough area down there,” Jenkins said. “We¹re going to put them in front of the kids and let them see they can be successful, too. “They all volunteered for this. They¹re not getting paid. We¹re probably losing a couple of thousand dollars on this, but we¹ll get that back just seeing those kids.” Originally published July 14, 2006
