Golf: Badawy rises up to ignite Cajun golfers

Dan McDonald
dmcdonald@lafayette.gannett.com

October 4, 2004

LAFAYETTE — The difference is like night and day.

Last spring, Peter Badawy was a virtually forgotten member of UL Lafayette’s golf team. He didn’t play in a single springtime tournament, and only made two appearances in the fall campaign. He averaged 76.4 strokes per round — nothing to write back home to McLean, Va., about.

That’s where he went during the summer, and apparently the now-junior found his game.

Over the Ragin’ Cajuns’ first two tournaments this year, Badawy has been the unquestioned leader of the squad. He fired a 73-71-73—217 score, two over par, in the season-opening North Texas Mean Green Invitational and came back with a one-under 70-75-67—212 score at Southern Mississippi’s Raising Cane Invitational.

He tied for third in the individual chase at North Texas and tied for seventh at the Raising Cane, after not hitting the top 40 in either of his sophomore-year events.

“I’m more relaxed out there now,” Badawy said as he prepared to lead the Cajuns into this week’s SMU Stonebridge Invitational. “I’ve grown to understand that it’s just golf … it’s not life or death, and I’m doing a lot better job of controlling my emotions.”

Cajun coach Bob Bass, whose team opens its third tournament of the fall today in Dallas, agrees with the change being mental, but said he can also see a physical change in Badawy’s play.

“He is a very physically talented player,” Bass said, “but right now you can see he has higher expectations of himself. It’s not just in practice but on the course. He expects more of himself.”

Badawy had a chance to win the season opener at North Texas down the stretch, an indication that the work he put in over the summer with swing coach Kirk Lucas in Virginia paid dividends. Lucas works with several touring pros as well as his wife Kris Tschetter, a rookie on the LPGA tour, with their swings.

“Kirk’s been working with me six years now, since I was 16,” Badawy said. “He’s been big in me growing. He worked with me on mechanics at first, and now it’s with learning to control my emotions on the course.”

His mechanics are apparently solid. Badawy’s one of the biggest hitters on the squad (“I usually have a lot shorter clubs into greens than most of the guys out here,” he said), and Bass said his wedge game has greatly improved over the past year.

“He’s got a good, tight swing, so he can deliver a lot of power,” Bass said. “He’s getting good scores in his rounds without even having hot putting rounds. He’s just a solid ball-striker.”

It’s the mental game that Badawy said has been his undoing in the past — and that has been his strength early in the collegiate season.

“I’d get impatient and I’d press,” he said, “and when things started going bad I’d get down on myself. It was really stressful.”

He could easily have lapsed back into that pattern this year. On his very first hole of the fall season at North Texas, he took a quadruple bogey eight on a par-four. But he worked his way back and played the rest of that round in three-under-par. From there on, he was even-par the rest of that event in a top-three finish.

“It feels really good to start off well,” he said. “I remember thinking at North Texas if I had more confidence in myself, I had the ability. Now I feel like I have that confidence.”

UL golf at SMU today

McKINNEY, Texas — UL Lafayette’s golf team opens play today in the SMU/Stonebridge Invitational, joining 16 other teams over the 7,202-yard par-72 Stonebridge Country Club course.

The Cajuns, coming off a fifth-place finish out of 15 teams at Southern Mississippi’s Raising Cane Invitational two weeks ago, finished 15th in a 17-team field in last year’s SMU event. However, UL Lafayette has finished in the top eight in each of its first two fall events this year.

Juniors Peter Badawy (71.5) and Glyn Bateman (73.5) and senior Steven Pena (72.3) are the upperclassmen in the Cajuns’ lineup this week. They will be joined by a threesome of Lafayette freshmen — Michael Smith, Morgan Landry and B.C. Thibeaux — who will be playing as a group for the first time. Smith finished tied for fifth in the USM event with a three-under 210 score.
