I arrived in New Iberia in 1960 when my family was transferred to the newly opened Navy Base. When the community found out that this 6’, 205# freshman was enrolled at CHS they automatically encouraged me to go out for the football team coached by the “frisky” new coach Raymond Blanco. Never having played sports, much less football that first August two-a-day ordeal was quite an experience. The demanding practices trimmed 35# off me in less than two weeks and for the first time in my life I was in shape. If it hadn’t been for the sophomore teammates, particularly Bill Bayard, I never would have made it past the 3rd day. Bill, Kenny Craig, The Gonsells, Ed Pratt, Ray Scott and even Baby Huey (Allen LeBlanc) did everything they could to keep me from quitting and going back to the sedentary lifestyle that I had enjoyed all my life (hope I didn’t leave anyone out). That sophomore class kept me going and I not only made it through two-a-days, I actually played sporadically when needed. Fast forward to 1962 and the rest is history. Bill and the other seniors pushed us through the undefeated season and the State Championship under Bill’s kind, compassionate and demanding guidance. Although Allen and I did not follow Bill and Coach Blanco to Lafayette, (Allen to LSU and me to Tulane) that experience at CHS, the teammates, the coaches, the Brothers and the other classmates redirected my future. I owe a very heartfelt thank you to Bill and the others for taking in this wandering Navy brat and making him feel for the first time that he belonged. Had it not been for the friendship, the care, the encouragement and the needed shove when necessary I would not have achieved the successes that I enjoy today. God Bless Bill Bayard for the impact that he had not only on me, but all others that were fortunate to know him.

The Bill Bayard story could easily begin with: “Once upon a time”.
Of fairy tale proportions with one exception, It’s True!
The ’62 Catholic High New Iberia State Championship Football Team was
artistically crafted by the coaching staff and applied to a canvas which
became a masterpiece for the team, community and later the
nucleus of Ragin’ Cajun football during the ’60’s. For those who followed, it
has served as a testament to duty and dedication. This artful creation
lead by Bill Bayard will serve as a tribute to his leadership, intelligence
and athletic prowess. He will have a lasting impact on the university and
should never be forgotten.

Respectfully,

Galen J. LaBauve
CHSNI 1966
USL 1970
