Bobby Banna’s Living Memorial, Carl Meche – Baseball 1971-74

Coach Bobby Banna was my baseball coach at USL for my Freshman year only (1970-1971).

At that time in his career, he was coaching football in the Fall and baseball in the Spring. I really did not know much about his baseball coaching style, but was aware of his tough-nosed football demeanor.

When spring training started, it was clear that he was going to whip us into baseball shape utilizing stretching and calisthenics, but it was the football drills that he incorporated into the practices that made our conditioning different.

He expected everyone to hustle. You were expected to run after the ball that you booted, run from the dugout to the on deck circle, run from the on deck circle to the batter’s box, and naturally run out anything hit in play or in foul territory.

You were required to run to first base even on a walk . If you were a bit lackadaisical or not hustling, he made you run stadiums at McNaspy Stadium, the football stadium. Those stadiums got you into better shape as well as made you focus on baseball and baseball only.

Coach Banna proved he was a competitor and expected us to compete to the end. He was of the opinion that the other team may have better talent than we had, but his team was going to out-work, out-fight, and be in better shape that the opposing team.

His philosophy about training and competing is something I learned from him that first year and utilized that philosophy the rest of my playing and coaching career.

Coach Banna, I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to play baseball and get a great education from the University of Southwestern Louisiana.
