Susan Williams Chambliss – Softball 1987-90

I will always be very appreciative that Coach Girouard gave me a chance to play Division I college softball. I’m only 4’11”tall. That never mattered to her. She saw how hard I worked and provided me an opportunity to continue my softball career.

There are so many memories. I have first-hand knowledge how the USL softball program started. My older sister played for ULM. When she played in Lafayette they played the game on a field that only had a backstop. It was across from the track and field stadium.

When I stepped on campus as a Freshman I could see where this program was growing. We had our own field because Coach Girouard put so much of her own money into it.

We all worked on the field. She dragged the infield and lined the baselines herself.

I remember getting into the back of her truck to go pick up wooden fence slats for the new wood fence that was being put up. Once the fence was up, the team, along with the coaches, painted it.

Girouard became our mother off the field as well. She would come by the dorm to make sure we were fine. She would have us over to her house for some of Mrs. Rosemary’s great cooking. It felt like home.

I remember winning the Southland Conference Tournament like it was yesterday. We continued as a team to get better and better.

The best memory of Coach Girouard was when we were selected as a host site for regionals. She had this huge grin on her face. To be able to represent our university and Lafayette was such an honor for her.

I am thankful to Coach Girouard for molding me into the woman I am today. She has taught me to never give up, to work hard not only on the playing field but in life itself.

I’m grateful for her friendship. I sit back today in awe of her for building a program from nothing to see where it is today.
