Golf: Jones, Calloway narrowly miss state title July 25, 2006 – It took a 12-hour day to crown a winner at the Louisiana Golf Association’s state Four-Ball Championship Sunday, but in the end it came down to one shot for New Iberia’s Kenley Jones and former University of Louisiana player Jeff Calloway. Both teams finished at 15-under 129 and went back on the course at approximately 7 p.m. following a round delayed almost 5 1/2 hours with a morning thunderstorm. Play was halted at 8:35 a.m. Sunday and didn’t resume until 2 p.m. A total of 12 teams withdrew during the delay. Lafayette’s John Davis and Bill Land, who won the state four-ball title in both 1999 and 2000, finished tied for fifth at 10-under 134. They had an opening 64 to stand in third place but could only manage a 70 in Sunday’s final round over the 7,000-yard par-72 Ellendale course. The LGA has three more of its state championships scheduled during the next four weekends, including one in Lafayette. Oakbourne will host the annual Senior Amateur (age 50 and up) Aug. 17-19, its third LGA state event in the past three years. The state Mid-Amateur (age 25 and up) is scheduled Aug. 4-6 at the University Club in Baton Rouge and the Net Amateur is Aug. 26-27 at Beaver Creek in Zachary. Originally submitted July 25, 2006
