Home Phone: 409-727-2948 Obituary: Roy Henckel, Jr. – Football 1951-53 – June 10, 2013 Roy Henry Henckel, Jr. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. –Psalm 119:16 On June 10, 2013, Roy Henry Henckel, Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Roy was born to Roy and Lucy Henckel, November 13, 1932. He grew up in Beaumont, graduated from Beaumont High School in 1951 and played football for University of Louisiana (formerly Southwest Louisiana Institute) before joining the Marine Corps. During his time in the Marines, Roy married Colleen Greer. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Beaumont with his family. Roy was a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who knew the meaning of family and showed us all how to love well. He and his bride, Colleen, enjoyed over 50 years of marriage. They raised 3 children: Rodney, Robert, and Sara. In turn, they taught us how to raise our families, with love, patience and plenty of laughter. Lots of laughter. Roy and Colleen also guided 6 grandsons to maturity: Wesley, Russell, Bradley, Taylor, Austin and Brandon. Roy enjoyed nothing more than watching his grandsons play sports, any sport, it didn’t matter. Pawpaw was there to cheer them on and to boo at the refs if they needed it. And nothing delighted him more than a rousing game of dominoes with the sons, grandsons, and a granddaughter-in-law, who always liked being Pawpaw’s partner. He was poised to introduce the game to new granddaughters-in-law and great grandchildren, who were also learning his favorite breakfast phrases: gooder than taters and better than snuff and good stuff, Maynard. Roy was a giving man. He gave himself to the provision of his family, coached his sons in baseball, and gave his Sundays to God and the Dallas Cowboys, in that order. During the Heritage Festival each year, you could find him volunteering with the Optimists at their food booth. He is survived by Colleen, his wife of 59 years; his son, Rodney and wife, Judy, and their sons, Wesley and Russell; Wesley’s wife, Michelle, and their children, Wesley Joseph and Maddie. Roy’s son, Robert and his wife, Lori, and their sons, Bradley and Taylor; Bradley’s wife, Erin. Roy’s daughter, Sara, and her husband Dale Dial; their sons, Austin and Brandon, and Austin’s fiancée, Taylor Hemby. Roy’s sisters, Margie Buchcannon and Mary Lou Vickery, and her husband, Harry. Many cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends join the family in celebrating Roy’s life. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me. Roy knew the one path that leads to eternal life and gives life on earth its meaning and purpose. He lived out this truth each day of his life, and we praise God that He took him home peacefully. Roy blessed our hearts, enriched our lives, and left a legacy of what manhood and fatherhood looks like, lives like and loves like. We miss him, mourn him and celebrate him. Whether you know him as Roy or Daddy, Pawpaw or his newest moniker, GP, to know Roy Henckel is to love Roy Henckel, and of all the gifts he gave us, love remains. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Broussard’s, 505 12th Street, Nederland, Texas 77627. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2013, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 2425 Nall Street (FM 365), Port Neches, Texas 77651; The Reverend Cliff Rucker, officiating.
