Track & Field: Beyer, Sinclair Lead In Heptathlon; Cajuns Seventh In Men’s Event At SBC Indoor BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Newcomers Franz Beyer and Angus Sinclair claimed the top two spots in the men’s heptathlon while senior Danielle Castaldi recorded the fastest time in the preliminaries of the women’s 800-meter run to pace the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns at the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Monday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Action will continue on Tuesday at 9 a.m. CT with the conclusion of the heptathlon followed by the women’s pentathlon at 9:20 a.m. CT. The first running event final will commence at 4 p.m. CT with the women’s 400-meter dash. Louisiana scored 12.5 points to finish in seventh place on the men’s side after the first day, highlighted by freshman Kyle Baudoin‘s second-place performance (16-4 ½) in the pole vault. The Ragin’ Cajuns added a seventh-place finish from both Caleb Wisecarver in the pole vault (15-5 ½) and Richard Delphin in the weight throw (55-9 ¾), with the men’s distance medley relay team (Jacob Chicola, Lamont Abraham, Corbett Ourso, Dylan Heck) finishing eighth overall in 10:48.19. In the heptathlon, Louisiana finished 1-2 after the first four events as Beyer scored 2,942 points to take the early lead with Sinclair trailing at 2,928. Beyer placed first overall in both the long jump (22-7 ½) and the high jump, where he set a Sun Belt Championship record after clearing the bar at 6-8. Sinclair followed Beyer in the long jump, posting a mark of 22-1 ½, and was third in the high jump (6-4 ¼) and fourth in both the 60-meter hurdles (7.27) and shot put (41-0 ¼). Three Cajuns – Jeryl Brazil (6.78), Hanoj Carter (6.84) and Bismarck Ebiweh (6.87) – each qualified for the finals in the men’s 60-meter dash with Carter also advancing to the finals of the 200-meter dash after posting the third-fastest time (21.30) in the preliminaries. In the men’s 60-meter hurdles, defending SBC champion Tyler Hughes posted the second-fastest time in the preliminaries (8.04) and eclipsing his Sun Belt Championship-record 8.07 set at last year’s meet. Castaldi recorded a season-best time of 2:13.74 to advance to Tuesday’s final with Alena Hrusoci qualifying in the 400-meters (56.58) and Jasmin Fusilier seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (8.74).
