Leleux sets school-record in pole vault; Hodges posts second-fastest time in steeplechase

LAFAYETTE – Morgann Leleux made a successful debut in setting a school record in the women’s pole vault title while Alena Hrusoci claimed the women’s 400-meter hurdles to lead the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns track and field team on the final day of the Louisiana Classics on Saturday at the Ragin’ Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.
 
Jasmin Fusilier and Alexandra Harrell finished second and third, respectively, in the women’s heptathlon while Claire Hodges posted the second-fastest time in school history in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:03.37) and Courtney Musgrove was second in the women’s 5,000-meter run (17:52.77).
 
"It was a little mixed bag for the weekend, we had a few events where we were really good," said head coach Lon Badeaux. "Our javelin throwers did very well, we had a great performance in the (men’s) 10,000, we did really well in the heptathlon, Claire did a great job in the steeplechase, Alena did really well in the 400 hurdles and Morgann was great in the pole vault."
 
Leleux, a New Iberia native and who transferred to UL after being a five-time All-American at Georgia, became the first women’s pole vaulter in school history to clear 13 feet as she posted a mark of 13-9 ¼. Freshman Alexa Johnson finished in 14th place for the Ragin’ Cajuns after clearing the bar at 10-11 ¾.
 
Hrusoci, the current school-record holder in the 400-meter hurdles, claimed the title with a time of 1 minute, 1.23 seconds with teammate Joya Tardieff finishing 11th at 1:06.90. Fusilier finished second overall in the heptathlon scoring 4,786 points with Harrell finishing third at 4,777 and freshman Alex Morrow eighth (3,859).
 
Freshman Hannah Siegmund earned a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (57.07) for Louisiana with Lindsay LaGarde (5:03.99), Hailey Hesterman (5:04.65) and Courtney Broussard (5:07.41) finishing sixth, seventh and ninth in the 1,500-meter run.
 
In the women’s 800-meter run, Danielle Castaldi recorded a seventh-place finish (2:23.81) with the women’s 4×400-meter relay team finishing fourth (3:58.57) and the 4×100-meter relay team seventh (47.12).
 
Lindsey Harmon earned a sixth-place finish in the women’s high jump (5-3) for Louisiana with freshman Courtney Rivers finishing eighth in the long jump (16-11 ¼), Tamela Young 10th in the shot put (40-1 ¼) and Amie Leitko 11th in the discus (132-1).
 
On the men’s side, Louisiana received a second-place finish from Jacob Chicola in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:55.12) with Dylan Heck finishing third (10:00.43). Morgan Cormier earned a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (53.60) for the Ragin’ Cajuns with Christian Bergeron finishing sixth in the 1,500-meter run (4:02.15), Tyler Hughes seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (14.56) and Bismarck Ebiweh ninth in the 100-meter dash (10.74).
 
The Ragin’ Cajuns earned a pair of fourth-place finishes from Franz Beyer in the high jump (6-6 ¾) and Kyle Baudoin in the pole vault (16-0 ¾). Josh McDaniel (15-7) finished fifth in the pole vault followed by Caleb Wisecarver (15-1), with Richard Delphin finishing seventh in the discus (158-4) and Spencer Nezat eighth in the shot put (49-4 ½).
 
Louisiana will resume action next week when they will send a limited contingent to the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays that begin next week in Austin, Texas.
