Golf: Magnus Earns Individual Bid To NCAA Stillwater Regional

Thomas Strandemo

LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns golf senior Haraldur Magnus earned his first career individual bid into one of the six 54-hole NCAA Regional tournaments conducted May 16-18, as he was named one of five individuals to compete at the Stillwater Regional hosted at Karsten Creek Golf Club.

"I’m very proud and honored for Haddi (Haraldur) to be able to represent the Ragin’ Cajuns in postseason play," head coach Theo Sliman said. "It’s a huge accomplishment and very deserving for a person who was consistent all season long. What a way for a person to finish up their senior campaign. I think the ultimate goal is for him to reach the championships in Eugene, Ore. Karsten Creek is a place that we’ve been successful as a program with Devin Carrey participating as an individual as well as our team making an appearance there in 2001."

The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon. The University of Oregon is the host institution for the 2016 championships.

Magnus is the fifth Louisiana golfer to earn an individual bid into the NCAA Regionals with Sliman at the helm joining Carrey in 2009, Philipp Fendt in 2010 and 2011 and Andrew Noto in 2011.

The Cajuns program will make its third NCAA postseason appearance at Karsten Creek Golf Club with the 2001 team receiving an at-large bid and Carrey competing as an individual in 2009. Sliman has been a part of both of the two previous trips competing as member on the 2001 squad before serving as head coach of the Cajuns in 2009.

Magnus posted 10 top 25 performances this season and 26 over his three-year career with the program. The Reykjavik, Iceland native had arguably one the best starts to a season in school history notching four straight top 10 performances.

On the season, Magnus is ranked 110 in the nation with a 72.09 scoring average through 34 rounds. Magnus has posted 18 rounds of par or better and a tournament victory in 2016.
