Golf: Gardarsson Receives All-America Scholar Accolade

NORMAN, Okla. ? Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns junior senior golfer Ragnar Gardarsson was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar for Division I, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced this week. Gardarsson is one of 212 players in Division I to earn the honor.

"I am very proud of Ragnar to receive this accolade," head coach Theo Sliman. "It’s not surprising, yet certainty is fitting for what we look for out of our student-athletes on the golf team. We want the guys on the team to excel both in the classroom and on the links. I think this is something positive that Ragnar can use to propel himself into a great senior campaign."

Gardarsson is the fifth Cajuns golfer under Sliman to earn the distinction joining Philipp Fendt, Andrew Noto, Thomas Strandemo and Christian Verrougstraete.

To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team’s competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

During his junior campaign, Gardarsson posted a 75.52 scoring average in 31 rounds with nine rounds of par or better and five rounds in the 60s. Gardarsson’s best finish came at the Sun Belt Conference preview where he placed 12th after carding a career-best round of 65. A native of Gullbringusysla, Iceland, Gardarsson is majoring in mathematics.
