Football: Cajuns Place Seven Players on Athlon Sports All-Sun Belt Team

LAFAYETTE – Highlighted by first-team selections Joe Dillon and Stevie Artigue, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns football team had seven players named to the Athlon Sports 2017 All-Sun Belt team.

Offensive lineman Kevin Dotson was named to the second-team with wide receiver Keenan Barnes a third-team selection. Three Cajuns – offensive lineman Robert Hunt, defensive lineman Taboris Lee and defensive back Tracy Walker – were named to the fourth team.

Artigue, who will be a junior in 2017, connected on 29 of 31 extra point attempts and was 19-for-24 (.792) in field goals. The Lafayette native finished as the Ragin’ Cajuns leader in scoring (86) with his 19 field goals tying John Roveto (1977) for the second-most in a single-season in school history.

Dillon, a USA Today Freshman All-America, played in all 13 games for the Ragin’ Cajuns and led all defensive linemen with 51 tackles. Dillon led the Ragin’ Cajuns in tackles for loss (12.5) and sacks (7.0), finishing sixth overall in the Sun Belt Conference in both categories, and was a second-team All-SBC selection.

Dotson earned the starting job at right guard in the second week of the season for the Ragin’ Cajuns and entrenched himself the remainder of the season. The Plaquemine, La., native played in all 13 games for the Ragin’ Cajuns and was named to the Sun Belt All-Newcomer Team.

Barnes, a junior, finished second on the team in both receptions (31) and yards (418) and tied for the Sun Belt Conference lead with six touchdown receptions. Hunt started all 13 games at left guard for Louisiana last season as a redshirt freshman while Lee played in all 13 games for the Ragin’ Cajuns and recorded 39 tackles with 5.5 stops for loss, two sacks, one interception and one pass breakup.

Walker, who will be a senior for the Ragin’ Cajuns, finished as the fourth-leading tackler (61) and team-leader in interceptions (3). He posted three pass breakups on the season and added 2.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.

Louisiana will report for fall camp on July 30 and will officially kick off its 2017 season on Sept. 2 against Southeastern Louisiana in the annual Herbert Heymann Football Classic at Cajun Field.
