Softball: Ellyson’s Efforts Lead to Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week Honors
Highlight was 11-inning outing in win over No. 2 Florida
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball sophomore pitcher Summer Ellyson was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week for her efforts last week in wins over a pair of nationally ranked foes.
Ellyson posted a 2-0 mark, earning the win in her starts against nationally ranked foes RV Oregon State and No. 2 Florida.
The highlight of the week was an 11-inning, 185-pitch effort in a 4-3 win over Florida on Sunday.
The Lafayette native and Teurlings Catholic High product scattered eight hits over five times working through the second-ranked Gators’ lineup. She kept UF from placing a runner in scoring position from the fourth through ninth innings as she dueled with Aleshia Ocasio.
On Thursday, she worked 4-2/3 strong innings against Oregon State which included retiring six of the seven hitters faced over the third and fourth innings as Louisiana built an 8-1 lead.
Ellyson collected her first career weekly award from the Sun Belt Conference.
It’s the second straight week a Ragin’ Cajuns pitcher wins the award. Kylee Jo Trahan took home honors on Feb. 13.
No. 15 Louisiana hosts the 32nd Annual Louisiana Classics tournament Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 22-25 at Lamson Park. The event wraps up a season-opening homestand which began back on Feb. 8 with the Mardi Gras Classic.
