Softball: Ellyson’™s Strong Finish Results in Sun Belt Weekly Honors

Sophomore hurler pitched 19 scoreless innings in regular-season ending series vs. ULM

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball sophomore pitcher Summer Ellyson has claimed the final Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week award for the 2018 season.
 
Ellyson received her third weekly award from the Sun Belt. She was also named pitcher of the week on Feb. 20 after wins over Oregon State and then-No. 2 Florida and on April 24 after winning the series clincher vs. Texas State and pitching 25 innings of one-run softball.
 
In the regular-season ending series vs. ULM, Ellyson pitched 19 innings of scoreless softball over two appearances highlighted by a 14-inning, complete game shutout on Friday in the series opener.
 
She retired the leadoff batter in all but two innings (seven times by strikeout) of Friday’s 14-inning blanking, threw a first-pitch strike to 41 of 47 batters faced and threw 118 of her 156 pitches for a strike. On Saturday, she worked five additional scoreless frames of relief in Game 3 to capture the win and series sweep for the Ragin’ Cajuns. 
 
For the weekend, Ellyson scattered nine hits during her time in the circle and got ULM swinging on 19 of the 22 strikeouts.
 
Ellyson, who completed the regular season 19-7 with a 1.42 ERA, has been at her best down the stretch. Since April 15, she has worked 65 innings and surrendered just eight earned runs (0.86 ERA), 41 hits and limited foes to a.174 average.
 
The Lafayette native presently ranks Top 30 nationally in ERA and fewest hits allowed, Top 40 in victories and Top 50 in strikeouts.
 
No. 21 Louisiana (36-13, 21-6 Sun Belt) hosts the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at Lamson Park Wednesday-Saturday, May 9-12. The Ragin’ Cajuns, the No. 2 seed for the event, have a bye from opening day action and will begin play on Thursday, May 10 at 12:30 p.m. against an opponent determined by Wednesday’s results.
