LAFAYETTE, La. – Senior left-hander Colten Schmidt became the fourth Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns player to be taken in the 2018 MLB First Year Players’ Draft on Wednesday as he was selected in the 23rd round by the Colorado Rockies.
"I’m proud of Colten as he will have the chance to live out a childhood dream and play professional baseball," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "It’s an honor to see yet another player from our program get drafted this year and Colten has been very deserving after the season that he had. He was able to overcome an injury during his junior year and come back and be the Friday night starter for us, which was big. Colten came to us as an undrafted player and was able to develop in our system and worked hard to have his named called in this year’s draft. We wish him the best of luck as he continues his career."
Schmidt, the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year, was taken with the 696th overall pick by the Rockies and joins Hogan Harris (3rd – Oakland), Logan Stoelke (9th – Pittsburgh) and Nick Lee (9th – Tampa Bay) on the list of players selected in this year’s draft.
A second team All-America selection, Schmidt had a banner year for Louisiana posting a 7-0 record with a league-best 2.45 ERA. Schmidt ranks fourth in the nation in walks allowed per nine innings (0.76) and fifth in strikeout to walk ratio (10.00). In 106.1 innings, Schmidt notched 90 strikeouts and limited opponents to a .214 average.
