LORMAN, Miss. – Karleen Bedre and Rachel Sutter each scored a pair of goals and the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Women’s Soccer team broke out of a season-scoring slump with a 7-0 win over Alcorn State on Sunday at Spinks-Casem Stadium. Hailey Hoffmann, Alyssa Abbott and Hailly Waterhouse each recorded their first goals of the season as Louisiana (3-6-0) set a single-match record for most goals in a road contest while tying the school-record for most goals in the second half (5). Jordan Higgins and Lauryn Starwood combined on a shutout as Louisiana held a 26-1 advantage in shots. Bedre, who added an assist on Sutter’s second goal in the 67th minute, posted her second career five-point game while moving into third place on the Ragin’ Cajuns all-time list in assists (12), sixth place in career points (38) and tied for sixth in goals (13). The junior got Louisiana on the board in the seventh minute after taking a pass from Savanna Young and scoring past Vivian Lugo for a 1-0 lead. Louisiana would take a 2-0 lead just before intermission as Sutter scored off an assist by Mikayla Price early in the 43rd minute. Waterhouse opened the scoring for Louisiana in the second half after collecting a corner kick from Ally White and scoring her first career goal in the 60th minute for a 3-0 lead. Hoffmann and Sutter would each score goals for Louisiana in a 22-second span as Hoffmann took a pass from Hailey Lander and scored her first goal of the season with a high-arching shot from the top of the 18-yard box early in the 67th minute. Sutter pushed the Ragin’ Cajuns lead to 5-0 later in the 67th minute when she scored for the second time to record her first-career, multi-goal match. Bedre increased Louisiana’s lead to 6-0 in the 77th minute after collecting a rebound off Ruthny Mathurin’s free kick and scoring past Lugo while Abbott closed out the scoring after taking a pass from Lucy Ortiz and scoring from outside the 18-yard box. Higgins, making her first start since Sept. 20, 2020, earned her first victory since Sept. 6, 2020 against South Alabama before Starwood handled the goalkeeping duties in the second half and recording one save. The win was Louisiana’s first on the road since a 2-0 victory at ULM on Oct. 18, 2020. Louisiana’s seven goals were the most in a road match, eclipsing the previous record (5) set against Nicholls on Sept. 19, 2007. Louisiana resumes Sun Belt Conference play when it returns to action in a 7 p.m., contest on Friday at Troy. The Ragin’ Cajuns will cap off their three-match roadtrip on Sunday (Sept. 26) when it faces defending SBC champion South Alabama in a 1 p.m., match.
