Soccer: Short-Handed Louisiana Falls at South Alabama, 1-0

Louisiana has two-match win streak snapped; will host A-State on Oct. 3

MOBILE, Ala. – Gracie Wilson flicked in a corner attempt early in the 37th minute for the match’s lone score and South Alabama held on to defeat a short-handed Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Women’s Soccer team, 1-0, in a Sun Belt Conference battle on Sunday at The Cage.

Louisiana (4-7-0, 1-2-0 SBC), which was playing without injured starters Julieta Limardo and Ruthny Mathurin, had its two-match win streak snapped as it played its first match in Mobile since the 2018 season.

Wilson gave South Alabama (6-3-1, 2-1-1 SBC) all the scoring it would need as she headed in a corner attempt by Danielle Fuentes past Libby Harper for a 1-0 lead at the 36:03 mark.

The Jaguars, who held an overall 7-4 advantage in shots in a rematch of the 2020 Sun Belt Conference semifinalists, took four attempts in the first half with Rachel Sutter and Carol Rodriguez each attempting first-half challenges for the Ragin’ Cajuns.

The teams kept up their respective defensive efforts in the second half, combining for five shots with Savanna Young and Karleen Bedre missing on opportunities for Louisiana in the final 45 minutes.

Harper stopped three shots for Louisiana while Jaguar goalkeeper Jaidy Campos stopped Bedre’s attempt on goal in the final minute.

Louisiana will return home to face Arkansas State on Sunday, Oct. 3, in a 1 p.m. contest at the Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
