Soccer: Louisiana Overpowers Southern In Home Soccer Debut, 3-0Cajuns post second straight shutout; will visit SHSU on Sunday
LAFAYETTE – Skyla Sykes scored a goal and added an assist in the second half and the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns women’s soccer team scored twice after intermission for a 3-0 victory over in-state opponent Southern University on Thursday at the Ragin’ Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex. Katherine Whitman scored a goal for Louisiana (2-2-1) in her first match in her hometown after playing three seasons at St. Edward’s (Texas) while Mackenzie Lee and Victoria Mendes combined on the Ragin’ Cajuns second consecutive shutout. Louisiana outshot Southern (0-3), 24-2, and took a quick 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when Whitman took a rebound off the post and scored past Southern goalkeeper Chioma Eriken. The Ragin’ Cajuns led 1-0 at halftime before scoring twice in a 2:07-span in the second half to put the match away. Una Einarsdottir scored her first goal of the season when she took a shot off a deflection from a Southern defender and scored past Eriken for a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute. Sykes, who was credited with an assist on Einarsdottir’s goal, added her second goal of the season in the 49th minute after Karleen Bedre and Hailey Daigle were credited with assists. Louisiana attempted 12 corner kicks – tied for the second-most in a match in school history – while 11 different players were credited with shot attempts. Eriken recorded eight saves for Southern while Lauryn McKinney and Cordney Armstrong were credited with second-half shot attempts. Louisiana will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 8) when it travels to Huntsville, Texas to face Sam Houston State in a 1 p.m. contest.
