Women’s Basketball:Huge Fourth Quarter Sends Louisiana to 79-73 Win at TroyRagin’ Cajuns pick up first win in Troy since 2006 season

- TROY, Ala. – Louisiana scored a season-high 30 points in the final quarter behind a career-high, 14-point performance from freshman Makayia Hallmon to power its way to an impressive 79-73 win on the road at Troy.
Trailing by three points entering the final quarter, Louisiana put together an incredible 10 minutes of basketball by shooting 63.6 percent (7-for-11) from the field and 87.5 percent (14-for-16) from the charity stripe to outscore Troy, 30-21, and steal the victory.
Hallmon led four Ragin’ Cajuns (10-5, 3-1 SBC) in double figures in the victory, which marked the team’s first over the Trojans in Troy since an 81-69 triumph on Jan. 14, 2006. The team also snapped a four-game losing streak against the Trojans in the process.
Junior Ty’Reona Doucet led the way for Louisiana with a team-high 17 points, including a 9-for-9 performance from the free throw line, and eight boards, while fellow junior Kimberly Burton scored a career-high 15 points, her fifth double-figure performance in six games, to compliment five rebounds and two blocks.
Skyler Goodwin rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points, the fourth time this season she has scored at least 10 points in a game this year. The team also saw a great effort by Jomyra Mathis, who contributed nine points, and Andrea Cournoyer, who scored just five points but hauled in seven boards and dished out a career-high eight assists.
Sophomore Brandi Williams, who finished the game with seven points, opened the first 2:49 of the game with five points to propel the team out on a 9-2 run. Troy closed the gap over the remaining time and eventually took a 16-15 lead with 52 seconds on the clock.
The Trojans upped their lead to 18-15 with a layup eight seconds into the second quarter, but a 9-0 run capped by a three-point play drawn by Burton put Louisiana ahead, 24-18, at the 6:59 mark. The lead hovered around that margin for the remainder of the period before Troy cut its deficit to two points before Burton banked home her second-career 3-pointer as time expired to put Louisiana up, 35-30, at halftime.
Things were looking grim for the Ragin’ Cajuns in the first 6:30 of the third quarter when the Trojans took a 48-40 lead with the help of an 18-5 run over that stretch. However, Mathis scored four points in the final 57 seconds to cut trim the deficit to 52-49 with 10 minutes remaining.
After Mathis cut the lead to one possession, Doucet and Hallmon led the charge for Louisiana at the 6:41 mark of the final quarter, scoring 18 of the team’s final 24 points, 14 of which came from Hallmon, to lock up the 79-73 victory.
Louisiana continues play on the road next week when it heads to The Lonestar State to face off with UTA on Thursday, Jan. 16. Tipoff in Arlington is slated for 11:30 a.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN� and ESPN1420.
