Obituary: Michael Ryder, Sr. – Tennis ((M) 1961 & 62 – January 11, 2010Michael Leon Ryder, Sr., 67, of Fredericksburg, died Monday, January 11, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital. Mr. Ryder was born October 14, 1942 in Opelousas, Louisiana to the late Clemence L. Ryder and Mildred Anne Bordelon. He was a United States Navy veteran having served from October 16, 1962 to June 16, 1966. A 1969 graduate of the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Mr. Ryder earned a Master of Science from American University in 1974. He retired from the Naval Service Warfare Center at Dahlgren as a physicist with 35 years of service. Mr. Ryder was a gourmet cook, enjoyed gardening and played tennis and guitar. He volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul Society, National Right to Life of Virginia, taught CCD classes at St. Mary Catholic Church, and tutored high school students in math. Survivors include his wife, Bethlyn W. Ryder; Daughter, Monica L. Maclndoe, and her husband, David, and their daughters, Kathleen and Emily; sons, Michael L. Ryder, Jr., and his wife, Sophia, and their daughter, Elise, Christopher Ryder, Shawn Ryder, Matthew Ryder and his daughter, Hailey, and Eric Ryder, all of Fredericksburg; sister, Mary Youngblood, of Texas; half-sisters, Darlene Ryder and Florence Barra, both of Louisiana; half-brother, Sean Ryder, of Louisiana; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Jacqueline Anne Chung. A Mass of Celebration will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 14, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. A rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wed, Jan 13 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
