NEW ORLEANS – Freshman defender Ruthny Mathurin earned her first collegiate honor as a member of the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Women’s Soccer team on Tuesday when she was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week in a release by the conference office.
Mathurin, from Gressier, Haiti, recorded a pair of assists – both off corner kicks – and played strong defense during Louisiana’s 1-0-1 week on the pitch.
She assisted on Tatum Beck’s goal in the 65th minute on Thursday in a 3-0 win against Little Rock and helped Louisiana to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute against Texas State with a corner kick that was headed in by freshman Carol Rodriguez.
The freshman, who has a pair of goals and four assists during the 2021 season, logged a season-high 110 minutes against Texas State to go over the 1,000-minute mark in her inaugural campaign.
Louisiana (6-8-2, 3-3-2 Sun Belt) will wrap up the regular-season with a pair of matches beginning on Thursday at Appalachian State. The Ragin’ Cajuns will conclude the regular-season at home on Sunday (Oct. 24) against ULM in a 3 p.m. contest at the Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
