Junior pole vaulter is second Cajun in as many weeks to claim SBC honors
NEW ORLEANS – Junior Kimmie Rushford became the second Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns track and field member to earn weekly honors in as many weeks when she was named on Wednesday as the Sun Belt Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week in a vote by the league’s head coaches.
Rushford, who joined teammate Juliette Smith in earning SBC weekly honors, set a personal-best in the women’s pole vault for Louisiana, clearing the bar at 12-4 ½ to earn first-place honors.
The DeRidder, La., native eclipsed her previous best (12-2 ½) set at last year’s LSU Alumni Gold meet, and broke her previous indoor best (11-11 ¾) set on Jan. 19 at the Samford Open.
The personal-best performance helped Rushford maintain her hold behind teammate and current SBC leader Reagann Leleux in the pole vault rankings.
The Ragin’ Cajuns will return to action on Friday when it travels to Baton Rouge to compete at the LSU Bayou Bengal at Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.
