Memories of Steve Oats - submitted April 8, 2021.

Steve Oats had very few passions in his life. His wife Sylvia was always paramount. There were his advocations as both a private pilot and his love of duck hunting. He was an accomplished lawyer and served on many boards and commissions in both Louisiana and around the country..but nothing took the place of his love and devotion to UL Lafayette and especially Ragin Cajun baseball.

Before the season, we would always review the schedule and with pin-point accuracy, chart the dates of home games and when tournament play was to begin.

Steve was a fixture in the Cooking Club where he would often bring enough food for most who wanted to eat. I remember with great clarity having an assortment of BBQ and fixings along with a plastic cup of Cabernet (always adhering to NCAA regulations having no glass of any kind in the stadium).

The view of the field from his Patio Box, adjacent to the visiting team’s dugout, offered ample opportunities’ to “chat” with opposing players as they traversed to and from the practice area to the dugout. Even if a player did not get into the game on a particular day, Steve made sure that each got noticed as they walked by: “Today is your day #11…try not to embarrass your parents.”

He had a voice tailored for a baseball fan. If an opposing coach was standing on the Cajun logo, Steve made sure that he heard of his objection. When the games ended, many a pitcher returned to the bus with Steve’s relentless chants ring in their ears.

Frankly, I miss my friend and more importantly, the great times we had at The Tigue and our many trips following Cajun baseball.

Memories are committed to the mind and heart…and I have many!
