Football: Cajuns headed to LendingTree Bowl in Mobile, Alabama
Tim Buckley, The Advertiser, Dec. 8, 2019
One day after falling in the Sun Belt Conference championship game, UL has learned its bowl game fate.
The 10-3 Ragin’ Cajuns will face MAC-champion Miami of Ohio in the Jan. 6 LendingTree Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.
The 8-5 Redhawks beat Central Michigan 26-21 in Saturday's MAC title game.
Their other wins include ones over Tennessee Tech, Buffalo, Northern Illinois, Kent State, Bowling Green and Akron. They lost Nov. 29 at Ball State, ending a five-game win streak. Their other losses include ones at Iowa and Cincinnati.
It will the Cajuns' first appearance in the Mobile game, previously known as the Dollar General Bowl.
UL lost 45-38 to nationally ranked Appalachian State in Saturday’s Sun Belt title game, hosted by the Mountaineers in Boone, North Carolina.
The loss ended a six-game Cajun winning streak.
The victory was Appalachian State’s fourth over UL since the start of last season, including two title-game meetings, and its eighth in eight all-time matchups.
Now 12-1, the Mountaineers will play Conference USA runner-up Alabama-Birmingham in the Dec. 21 New Orleans Bowl.
It will be Appalachian State's second straight appearance in New Orleans.
Because the Mountaineers could not be placed elsewhere, New Orleans could not land the Cajuns, which, because of potential draw at the gate, they have been more than willing to do even after UL lost in the title game.
App State had been hoping for an invite to the Belk Bowl in nearby Charlotte, or perhaps the Boca Raton Bowl to play Conference USA-champ Florida Atlantic.
UL, which lost to Tulane at last year’s Cure Bowl in Orlando, will be headed to its second bowl game in two years under second-season coach Billy Napier and to its seven bowl in nine seasons.
That includes five New Orleans Bowl appearances since 2011, with four wins from 2011-14 – two of them later vacated due to NCAA rules violations – and a loss to Southern Mississippi in 2016.
