Football: Ron Roberts Named a Broyles Award Nominee

Second-year defensive coordinator has revamped Louisiana into a top Sun Belt defense

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Football’s defensive coordinator Ron Roberts has been selected as one of 41 nominees for the prestigious Broyles Award, the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Roberts, along with the other 40 coaches named as nominees, were picked from a pool of 1,500 assistant coaches from 130 Division I programs across the country. The award honors college football’s top assistant coaches.

Coaching in his second season at Louisiana, Roberts has completely transformed the Ragin’ Cajuns defense into one of the stingiest in the Sun Belt Conference and in all of college football.

Through nine games this year, Louisiana ranks 11th in the nation in scoring defense (17.1) and red zone defense (.708), while coming in at No. 32 in the nation in total defense, allowing just 338.0 yards per contest.

In just two years, Roberts has taken a unit that ranked near the bottom of the Sun Belt Conference and propelled them into the top-3 in nearly every major defensive category in the league.

A 20-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semi-finalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner. Those finalists will be invited to travel to Little Rock, Ark. where the 2019 Broyles Award winner will be announced on Tuesday, December 10th at the Marriott Hotel.

Louisiana returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 16, when it travels to Mobile, Ala., for a date with South Alabama. Kickoff from Ladd-Peebles Stadium is slated for 4 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN.
