LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball used a resurgent offensive unit and continued solid play on defense to capture a sweep of play on Friday in the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic at Earl K. Long Gym.
The Ragin' Cajuns (2-3) scored at least 14 kills per set and hit above the .200 mark in both matches against McNeese and Eastern Michigan. Defensively, Louisiana reached its season average in tallying over 18 digs per set on the day.
Louisiana collected a 3-2 (23-25, 27-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-9) come-from-behind win over McNeese (2-3) to start the day as the offense's 67-51 edge in kills eventually paid dividends. The Ragin' Cajuns scored the first eight points of the fourth set to force a winner-take-all frame, then held the Cowgirls to a .000 hitting percentage in the decisive fifth set.
A 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-23) sweep of 2018 NCAA Tournament participant Eastern Michigan (1-3) was sparked by a season-best .240 hitting percentage (44 K, 13 E, 129 TA) and the service of Celeste Darling who led the Ragin' Cajuns on a 7-0 set-ending run in the second stanza that opened a 2-0 match lead.
Darling landed a season-high 16 kills in the McNeese match. She was joined in double figures by Kelsey Bennett (13 kills), Dree'Ana Abram (10 kills) and Desiree Johnson (10 kills).
Setters Avery Breaux and Gemma Cantone ran the 6-2 scheme for Louisiana, tallying 31 and 23 assists, respectively.
Hannah Ramirez scooped 20 digs against the Cowgirls – the first of what would be two 20-plus efforts on the day. Tia Jade Smith threw up a team-best five blocks including two crucial ones in the fifth set.
Hali Wisnoskie produced nine kills in the nightcap vs. EMU leading a balanced effort for the Ragin' Cajuns which saw six players score at least five kills.
Abram registered seven kills off just 14 swings and finished with a .357 percentage against the Eagles, giving her a second straight .300-plus effort (hit .368 vs. McNeese).
Fueled by 11 digs in the opening set, Ramirez wound up with her season-best and a match-high of 21 in the EMU contest.
Louisiana seeks a sweep of the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic on Saturday when the squad completes tournament play at 12:30 p.m. vs. Florida A&M.
