Strong First Half Carries Lamar Past Louisiana, 5-1

Bedre scores first career goal for Louisiana; Cajuns head to face NIU, Chicago State

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lucy Ashworth and Sophia Manibo each scored goals in the first 15 minutes of the opening half and Lamar added a third goal before intermission to claim a 5-1 victory over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team on Sunday in the final match of the Cardinal Classic on Sunday at the LU Soccer Complex.
Esther Okoronkwo added a goal and two assists as Lamar (1-1-0) outshot Louisiana (0-2-0), 18-13, and won for the second consecutive time against the Ragin' Cajuns in the six-match series.
Freshman Karleen Bedre scored her first career goal for Louisiana in the 76th minute while Mackenzie Lee tallied three saves for the Ragin' Cajuns. Madysin Girouard added an assist for the Ragin' Cajuns while Bedre, Una Einarsdottir and Rachel Sutter each took three shots.
Ashworth gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of the match when her left-footed shot from just outside the 18-yard box went past Louisiana goalkeeper Mackenzie Lee into the upper left corner of the net.
The Cardinals added a goal in the 15th minute on a penalty kick by Manibo before Madison Ledet put a shot in the back of the net in the 32nd minute for a 3-0 lead.
Okoronkwo added a short-handed goal in the 58th minute for Lamar after she got past the Louisiana defense and scored off a pass from Anna Loftus. Meg Sheppard closed the scoring for Lamar when she scored in the 87th minute off passes from Okoronkwo and Kaisa Juvonen.
Louisiana will return to action on Friday when it visits Northern Illinois in a 7 p.m., match in DeKalb, Ill. The Ragin' Cajuns will close out their season-opening, four-match road trip on Sunday (Sept. 1) against Chicago State in a 1 p.m., contest at Kroc Stadium.
