Baseball: Gunner Leger Named a Senior CLASS Award Finalist

Leger joins Matt Hicks as the only Ragin’ Cajuns to be named a finalist for the award

LAFAYETTE – A stellar career both on and off the mound is being recognized on a national scale as Louisiana Baseball's Gunner Leger was named a Senior CLASS Award Finalist, the national organization announced on Wednesday morning.

Leger is one of 10 semifinalists this season and joins Matt Hicks, who earned Senior CLASS Award First-Team All-American Honors in 2014, as the only two Ragin' Cajuns to be named finalists for the nationally-recognized award.

"We are all extremely proud of everything that Gunner has been able to accomplish in his career," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "Since he arrived on campus, he has been a model student, player and person. His leadership and positive attitude has inspired those around him, and his tenacity on the mound elevates the play of everyone else on the field. He is very deserving of this honor."

The Lake Charles, Louisiana, native is 24-12 in his four seasons in the Vermilion and White and boasts a 2.40 career ERA. With 319.1 innings pitched, Leger is the school record holder for career starts (53) and sits just outside the program's top five for career strikeouts (279).

After a stellar 2017 campaign, he was named a Golden Spikes semifinalist and earned All-America recognition from four different institutions, joining Wyatt MarksJace ConradStefan Trosclair and Phil Devey as the most decorated All-Americans in program history.

He also earned All-America honors in both his freshman and sophomore seasons, has been named to three Sun Belt Preseason Teams, three Sun Belt All-Conference Teams, was the 2015 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and the 2017 Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

A fan poll will make up a percentage of the final vote for the award and will run through June 10. Fans are encouraged to vote for Leger by clicking here.
