2018-19 Basketball Schedules Announced for Men and Women

Women's Basketball 2018-19 Non-Conference Schedule Highlighted By Four SEC Schools

David Collins, Athletics Communications Assistant

LAFAYETTE – Seven home games across the first two months of the season highlight the 2018-19 Louisiana Women's Basketball non-conference schedule, announced on Thursday, with in-state foe Louisiana State making a rare trip to the Cajundome in December, as one of four Southeastern Conference schools that the Ragin' Cajuns will face off with during their non-conference slate.

LOUISIANA STATE HEADS DOWN I-10: For the first time since Nov. 19, 1998, Louisiana State will be making the short drive down I-10 to Lafayette to take on the Ragin' Cajuns. For only the second time in history, Louisiana will face off with Louisiana State in the Cajundome, with the other time being a matchup on Dec. 19, 1989.

FOUR TIMES THE SEC: For the second-straight year, Louisiana will face off with four SEC teams. Starting with a trip to Auburn on Nov. 25, the Ragin' Cajuns will make two other trips to SEC country throughout the first two months of the season. They will next head up to Oxford, Mississippi, to take on Ole Miss on Dec. 12. Louisiana wraps up non-conference play on Dec. 30, with a trip to Starkville, Mississippi, where the Ragin' Cajuns will face off with back-to-back National Runners-Up Mississippi State. The weekend before that game in Starkville, Louisiana will host Louisiana State at the Cajundome for the Cajuns' final home game before starting Sun Belt Conference play in January.

OPENING AT HOME: For the second-straight season, Louisiana opens the 2018-19 regular season at the Cajundome, when it hosts Lamar on Tuesday, Nov. 6. On Thursday, Nov. 1, Louisiana will play one tune up exhibition game against LSU-Shreveport before the opening game against Lamar.
TRAVELING DOWN THE ROAD: Louisiana's first road game of the season will be on Sunday, Nov. 11, when it heads west down I-10 to face off with McNeese State. It's the third-straight season that Louisiana will take on McNeese, and the Ragin' Cajuns have won the past two matchups.

Last season's matchup at the Cajundome was a memorable marathon that went three overtimes, the first triple overtime game in Louisiana Women's Basketball history, that the Ragin' Cajuns eventually won 98-86.

HEADING TO TEXAS: This season's non-conference tournament will see the Cajuns making a quick trip west to Edinburg, Texas, to take part in the Texas Rio Grande Valley: Battle on the Border hosted by UT-Rio Grande Valley over the final weekend in November. The Cajuns will begin the tournament taking on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday, Nov. 30, before wrapping up the weekend with the hosts, facing off with UTRGV on Saturday, Dec. 1.

FOUR OTHER HOME GAMES: Sprinkled throughout the SEC school matchups and Louisiana's trip to UTRGV, four other schools will make stops at the Cajundome. The Cajuns will host Dillard on Nov. 14, followed by Jackson State on Nov. 19, that combined with the home opener against Lamar, gives Louisiana three home games during the month of November.

During December, Sam Houston State comes to Lafayette on Dec. 8, followed by Xavier (La.) making the two-hour drive from New Orleans on Dec. 15. Combined with Louisiana State, on Dec. 20, the Cajuns will have another three home games in the final month of 2018.

(Head Coach Garry Brodhead):
"We really feel that the non-conference schedule for the 2018-19 season is going to really challenge our team. It should also prepare us for the grueling 18-game conference schedule we will face this year. The four SEC schools on our schedule will test our young program and the Louisiana State game gives our fans an opportunity to experience a great contest at the Cajundome. Overall, we are excited to get out there and start playing the season, with the ultimate goal of winning a conference championship, this schedule should hopefully get us ready to achieve that goal."

LAFAYETTE – Road games against Kansas and Tennessee, two of the top three teams in ESPN's Preseason Basketball Power Index (BPI), a Thanksgiving Week appearance at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Florida along with three in-state road games highlight the 2018-19 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns non-conference road schedule that was released on Monday.
Louisiana, which released its home schedule last week highlighted by contests against Southern (Dec. 1) and Louisiana Tech (Dec. 15) in non-conference play, will open its road schedule on Nov. 9 against Tennessee in the NIT Season Tipoff.
"It's a challenging schedule that will test us early with games at top-10 programs Tennessee and Kansas in the first two weeks of the season," head coach Bob Marlin said. "The Gulf Coast Showcase will be an opportunity for us to play three games in a row against quality teams. It's always good preparation for us in getting ready for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Our fans and alums outside of the Lafayette area will have a chance to watch us play in-state games in New Orleans, Lake Charles and Hammond after Thanksgiving and heading into (SBC) conference play."
Tennessee, the defending SEC champions, enters the 2018-19 season ranked No. 3 in ESPN's BPI rankings. The Volunteers, who were picked to finish 13th last season in the 14-team league, finished 26-9 overall last season and reached the second round of the NCAA Championships where it was upset by eventual Final Four participant Loyola-Chicago.
The Ragin' Cajuns will return to action one week later in the NIT Season Tipoff, making their first-ever visit to historic Phog Allen Fieldhouse to face Final Four participant Kansas. The 14-time defending Big 12 champions and the Preseason No. 1 team in ESPN's BPI rankings, posted a 31-8 record and reached their 15th Final Four in school history.
The game against Kansas will mark the first of four games in six days for Louisiana, that will conclude with three games in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Fort Myers, Fla. The three-day, eight-team tournament, which runs from Nov. 19-21, will include a field that features host Florida Gulf Coast, Colorado State, South Dakota State, Toledo, UTSA and Tulane. The complete tournament field and official bracket will be released at a later date.
Louisiana will end the month of November with the first of seven straight games within the state as it will visit New Orleans on Nov. 28 at Lakefront Arena. After four straight games at home for the Ragin' Cajuns in the month of December, Louisiana will close out non-conference action with road games on Dec. 18 at McNeese State and Dec. 29 at defending Southland Conference co-champion Southeastern Louisiana.
Louisiana opens league play on Jan. 3 against Arkansas State at the Cajundome before facing Little Rock on Jan. 5.
The Ragin' Cajuns will face SBC rivals South Alabama (Jan. 24) and Troy (Jan. 26) for the only time during the regular-season at the Cajundome while also hosting Georgia Southern (Feb. 7), Georgia State (Feb. 9), ULM (Feb. 16), Coastal Carolina (Feb. 28) and Appalachian State (March 3) at the Cajundome.
